So where were we? Oh yeah. The cliff-hanger...

For those who do not know/remember... here's a quick repeat of the previous chapter.

Then I heard a branch snap. I turned around and looked into the direction of the sound. My eyes grew wide at what I saw. There... only a few feet away... there was a wolf!

I stood as if frozen to the ground. What should I do? Now I really began to panic.

The wolf slowly crawled closer and closer.

Then I heard another snap. Slowly I turned my head, not really wanting to take my eyes of the wolf and there... there was another wolf.

Carefully I looked around and then I realized that I was surrounded by a whole pack!

Oh, I'm in such deep shit right now...

Chapter 3: mirage or illusion?

I was so afraid that I had completely forgotten about the cold. My heartbeat quickened as adrenaline shot through my veins. I wanted to run away but I had no idea where I was and I do not think that I would be faster than these wolfs.

Okay. "Time for some quick thinking Hayley" I thought in an effort to order my thoughts. I read something about lying death. No, that was with bears. I shot a look at one of the wolfs. Well, on the other hand, these wolfs could easily pass for bears. They were huge! Thinking about the wolfs. Why hadn't they attacked yet? Why wasn't I already torn to pieces? Not that I really wanted that but still weird.

I breathed in and out. I had decided. I needed to be brave now. I looked up with determination in my eyes. If I'm going to die here. I'm not going to die without a fight even against this. "Hey what do you want?" I said to the biggest wolf in the pack. He turned his head towards me and I looked him straight into the eyes. It made me shiver but I wasn't going to look away not now.

Then the wolf growled. It almost made me want to step back but I wasn't planning on letting him win. The big black wolf crawled closer but I wasn't going to move. Then he stood straight before me. I had to look up to look him in the eyes. What if he bites now. A shudder ran down my spine. I shouldn't think about that.

We stood there, unmoved, for what seemed a long time. It was so intense. It felt as if we were linked. Me and the black wolf. It felt as if I could look deep into his soul and I felt as if I looked at a really gentle person. I shook my head breaking eye contact. No I shouldn't think like that. There is a huge scary wolf in front of you Hayley! The wolf began to growl. I looked at it puzzled. The wolf almost seemed angry at me for breaking eye contact.

Suddenly I could hear a loud howl. It was far away but I could hear it as if it was only a few feet away. We all looked into the direction of the howl. The black wolf, me and the other wolfs. I blinked a couple of times when I realized what I was doing. What was wrong with me! I should be afraid or something. Trembling. Though I wasn't afraid at all now. I felt almost... relaxed.

Then the wolfs started to back away, except for the big black one. Somehow it kept looking at me. I tilted his head a little as if he wanted to say something but then, as suddenly as he came, he was gone just like the rest of the pack. I looked around. Now I was alone again. The coldness flew inside me again. I shivered and tried to keep warm by embracing myself. Of course, it didn't work. Breathing got harder. It almost felt as if my lungs were turned into ice. Not good... I thought just before crashing down onto the ground.
