They walked through the streets until Tam and Keefe arrived at the gateway exit.
They stepped inside a bubble and waited for it to go up.
Tam faced away from Keefe.
"Hey, Tam?" Keefe asked, "Did I do something?"
Tam ignored him.
The bubble started to rise through the ocean.
Smooth jazz filled the awkward silence.
Keefe had no idea what had just happened.
They were joking and laughing with each other when suddenly Tam got up to leave and seemed to be almost mad at Keefe ever since.
Keefe was getting kind of worried. Did he say something wrong?
He gasped.
Crap.
Tam started acting like this when Keefe had made the joke about his awful hair!
Was he offended by the joke? Was he mad?
Keefe looked over at Tam.
He was totally mad. Keefe needed to do something.
"Tam?" Keefe said, "I know I said your hair looks weird, but it's the inside that matters right?"
Tam looked confused. "What?"
"In fact your hair isn't even that bad!" Keefe was on a roll now. "I mean sure you look like you cut it with a lawn mower but-"
"Excuse me?"
Keefe winced. Okay that came out wrong. There was a but! He was going to say but!
"Wait no, that's not what I meant, actually I-"
Tam rolled his eyes and turned away.
Keefe opened his mouth, then closed it again.
The rest of the bubble ride was in silence.
The bubble popped and they each light leaped back to Candleshade.
Tam fell from the air and landed on his butt.
Ouch.
Good luck sitting down for the next three weeks.
He got up and he followed Keefe back into his house.
After a super long and passive aggressive elevator ride, they entered Keefe's room.
Keefe ran to his closet to find his alchemy kit.
Tam sat down on Keefe's couch and sulked.
Keefe sucked.
He was not cute.
Or nice.
Or funny.
He wasn't.
One second they were getting along and joking, then the moment they stepped in the bubble Keefe started to insult him again.
Jerk.
Keefe returned from his room holding a large cardboard box in his arms.
He plopped the box onto a table with a thump, and started to unpack whatever was in it.
The room was silent, save for the clinking of glass vials as Keefe removed them from the box and laid them onto the table.
Tam glared at him from the couch.
Keefe rolled his eyes, and finished unpacking the box.
"Can you pass me the recipe." Keefe said coldly.
Tam rolled his eyes and yanked the recipe out of his pocket as aggressively as he could without ripping the paper.
"Here." he held it out for Keefe.
Keefe snatched it from his hands.
He read the recipe and started to follow along with the directions.
Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Set aside.
Mix in golden paint and vanilla milk until the mixture is a light yellow.
Keefe mixed the golden paint and Vanilla together and put it aside.
"It said light yellow." Tam said. "That's practically neon. You could use that batter to highlight textbooks."
Keefe looked at the batter. "It looks light yellow to me."
"Well, gee I didn't know you were colour blind!"
"Is that really the best insult you could come up with!?" Keefe exclaimed.
"Whatever, sure, how about you go ahead and ruin the paint bombs that we spent all day finding ingredients for!"
"Maybe I will!" Keefe glared, turning back to the batter.
Slowly fold in the blended cactus root, taking care that the mixture is light and fluffy.
Keefe folded the cactus root, and checked for air bubbles.
Tam just kind of stared at him angrily from the couch.
Keefe whirled around. "Are you just gonna sit there and stare at me?!"
"I'm just trying to make sure you don't mess everything up like you always do!"
"Well, if you really feel that way, then why don't you leave!" Keefe shouted.
Tam got up. "You know what? Fine! I will leave!"
"Fine by me!" Keefe said.
"Good!" Tam stormed out Keefe's room and slammed the door behind him. The sound echoed through Candleshade.
Note: okay, wow this was really bad. I'm not too great with drama
Also, I'll try to stick to my regular updating schedule, but I may be a few days late here are there, because I'm participating in Nanowrimo this year!
And as always, it would be so nice if you would comment and vote if you liked this chapter! Thank you!
