April Fools

I don't know what to name this chapter

More than halfway into the movie the doorbell rang.

Tam jerked awake and rubbed his blurry eyes.

Linh paused the movie. "Can you get the door? It's probably Sophie."

"Why me? She's your girlfriend."

"Because."

"That's not fair! "

"Too bad."

"I'm not getting it."

"Well neither am I."

"You don't do anything here!"

"Excuse me, I made brownies."

"They were burnt!"

"So? You ate them didn't you?"

"Well I'm not moving."

"That pretty much sums up your entire life."

"You suck."

The doorbell rang again.

Linh slapped her hand to her nose. "Dibs not it."

"Hey! That wasn't fair!"

"Nothing in life is fair."

Tam grumbled as he got up. Linh shot him a thankful smile. Tam glared back.

He trudged across the dark room, trying not to trip on something and break his head open. If he did he hoped Linh would feel bad. Really bad.

He finally reached the door and opened it to reveal a smiling Sophie. She looked sort of worn out, her hair was a mess and she had bags under her eyes. Must suck to actually be dedicated to your schoolwork.

He sighed and stepped aside to let her come in.

"Thanks Tam!" Sophie said as she hung her coat and removed her boots. 'What movie are you watching?"

"Ponyo."

"Oh I love that one." Sophie followed Tam back though the dark before finally arriving at the living room. She climbed under the blanket, and cozied up against Linh.

Tam sat back down and tried to get comfy again.

He yawned. It must be super late.

"What time is it?" He asked.

Sophie checked her watch. "1:30 am. Wow I've been studying for nearly five hours!"

Linh gently kissed her. "Which is why you should relax and watch a movie with us."

Sophie nodded. "Speaking of homework, do you guys think you're ready for the test on tuesday"

The what?

Linh shrugged. "Sort of."

Tam nodded along, trying to pretend that he knew there was a test all along. "Yeah. Totally gonna ace it."

"I hope Keefe actually studies." She started to pick at her eyelash, "He might actually be in serious trouble this time."

Tam frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that I was waiting to speak to the guidance counselor and I overheard Master Leto have a conversation with the school board." Sophie said, "They said that this is the last straw for Keefe, and if he doesn't get good marks and stay out of trouble, that's it. Off to exilium."

Tam slowly felt a feeling much like terror descend upon him. "But..how will they know if he gets in trouble?"

Sophie sighed. "Tomorrow's April Fools' Day, right?"

The twins nodded.

"They're expecting him to have some sort of huge prank planned, as he always does. The teachers planned on catching him tonight, when they thought he would set up the prank. The school is hardly empty, it's filled with teachers and Councillor Alina waiting to catch him in the act."

Catching Tam's horrified gaze, Sophie quickly finished. "But don't worry, Keefe mentioned that he was setting up whatever prank he has planned this morning, not tonight. He would have finished hours ago."

Tam felt an emptiness in his stomach.

"But..." Tam started, "But he didn't. I accidentally messed up his prank and now he's setting it up tonight. He's probably sneaking into Foxfire as we speak!"

"What!" Sophie sat up straight, "He's going to get expelled!"

Tam's head was rushing. This was all his fault! If he hadn't ruined Keefe's paint bombs, they wouldn't have had to go to Atlantis to find ingredients, then spend extra time making them!

Keefe was going to be kicked out of school and it was Tam's fault.

There was only one option for him.

"I'll go." Tam said. "I'll go warn him about the teachers. I can try to sneak into the school, and hopefully find him before the councillors do."

Sophie frowned. "Don't you hate him?"

"Yeah." Tam said unconvincingly. "I hate him so, so much. -Sophie raised her eyebrow- I'm not cruel though. I messed up his April Fools and if he gets expelled it would be because of me, so I should be the one to help him!" He got up and started to make his way to the door.

Linh nodded. "Want me to come too?"

Tam shook his head as he pulled on his coat. If he got caught sneaking into school, he didn't want Linh to go down with him. "Thanks, but it's fine. You guys finish watching the movie and I'll hail you if I fail horribly."

"Well then..good luck!" Linh said, and Sophie nodded in agreement.

Tam closed his door behind him, and took off running to the gate so he could light leap away.

He hoped he could make it in time.
