"Good morning Brooke! Excited for your first day?" Elise the petite brunette receptionist at the front desk asked.
"I am. I'm ready to get started, but a bit nervous about being at a new place, and the learning curve that comes with it. New faces and client names, as much as anything."
"That's understandable, but I think you'll find Mr. Stearn very easygoing. The thought of going to partial retirement seems to have mellowed him."
Brooke relaxed some at the idea as she glanced around the lobby, taking in the sleek, modern, yet somehow inviting atmosphere filled with cool grays, whites, and pops of blue. "Is Mr. Stearn ready for me?"
"Actually, Susan Davis, his paralegal that will be training you, called down to say that their morning meeting is running long, and they don't expect to be ready for you until about 9:30. She suggested you sit with me for a few minutes and learn the phone system." Elise noticed Brooke's raised eyebrows. "Not that you'll be doing what I do, but understanding the basics of the phones will be helpful, and I think she also didn't want you to feel abandoned." Elise pulled out the chair next to her.
"Thanks. How long have you been here, Elise?"
"Three years. After high school I started out at community college for a year, but it wasn't really my thing, so I-" she stopped to press a button for the phone, and spoke into her Bluetooth. "Stern, Hastings and Associates, Attorneys at Law. This is Elise. How may I help you this morning?...Yes. Just one moment please." She pressed some buttons. "Yes, you have a call from Mr. Bradford...Yes sir, I'll put him through." After pressing more buttons she turned to Brooke. "So, where was I?"
"Community college wasn't really you're thing."
"Oh, yes, so I quit school and started as a receptionist at a pediatric dentist's office. I really liked being a receptionist, but it was a small office and it got kind of boring. Except for the time this kid threw up in the waiting room and passed out, then the ambulance came. He ended up fine, anyway, when I saw this job opening, I snagged it. It's been a perfect fit. I love it here." She answered the ringing phone. "Stern, Hastings and Associates, Attorneys at Law. This is Elise. How may I help you this morning? Hello? Hello? They hung up," she said as she disconnected the call and shrugged.
Brooke watched the blond as she pushed buttons effortlessly. Elise was surely close in age to herself. Her phone buzzed and she looked down to see it was from Jacob. The gif he sent caused her to laugh out loud, and Elise turned back to her with a smirk.
"Someone has just made your morning."
Brooke couldn't conceal her smile. "It's my friend, Jacob." Elise raised an eyebrow. "When we were eating dinner the other night, I mentioned my hours the first day were 9 to 5, and his grandmother suggested we watch the movie 9 to 5 with Dolly Parton from 1980. We did, and it was hilarious. So he just sent me a gif from that movie." Brooke held out her phone.
Elise looked out it and chuckled. "So tell me about this guy. He must be more than a friend if you're hanging out with his grandmother, eating dinner, and watching movies." Brooke's grin grew wider. "Is he cute?"
"I just got out of a toxic relationship with my son's dad." Brooke's face turned serious, just thinking about Tyler. "So I'm not in a hurry to get in another one, but he certainly might help me get over my ex faster." Brooke surprised herself that she just admitted her hope for something with Jacob. "And he's not cute." Elise raised one eyebrow, but Brooke smirked. "He's absolutely gorgeous. Like the most beautiful man I've ever seen, and he's got this rough around the edges, don't give a care look." She sighed just thinking about him.
