Chapter 4: A New Enemy

~Avalon~2 Weeks Later~

        I look over at my brother, who is talking to our father. It has been two weeks since Thiasa's betrayal and Michen is having a hard time believing it. Mika's job is trying to persuade him to let Thiasa go and move on, but it is proving difficult. Meanwhile, women have been coming in and spending a day with him. I stop and watch as the palace doors open and a guard walks in, followed by a brunette, who looked around in awe, a smile on her face as she followed the guard towards Michen and our parents.

        "Your majesties," the guard says with a bow, motioning towards the woman, who curtsies, "this is Mady," she smiles at Michen, who politely returns the smile. Soon, the two goes out for a walk around the city to talk. I was about to go talk to Mika when an arm snakes around my waist and turns me towards them. I didn't need to look to know it was Kane. I blush as two maids walking by look at us and giggle softly.

        "Kane, we are in public," I say softly as he leans down and kisses me. I return the kiss, wrapping my arms around his neck as he pulls me closer to him, "Kane," I say between kisses, "we are in public," he sighs but continues to kiss me.

        "So?" he asks softly before kissing me again, "why would you care?" I smile and kiss him for a few seconds more before stepping back.

        "I have to go on patrol, wanna come with me?" I ask him. He nods and we walk out of the palace.

        We are five miles away from the city and everything is calm.

        "Are you ready for the wedding?" I ask Kane suddenly. He looks over at me and smiles.

        "The fact that it is in two months makes me nervous and excited," he says , looking ahead of us. I look at him, curiously.

        "Why?" I ask. He looks at me before speaking.

        "Nervous? Because a lot of people, people who want me dead, will be attending and watching," he says and my eyes widen in both shock and confusion, but before I can say anything, he inturrupts me, "Excited? Because I will be marrying the woman I love and spending the rest of my life with her," I smile and grab his hand.

        "Kane," I say softly, "I am nervous as well, but the people attending won't hurt you," he looks at me.

        "Ava," he says, "have you seen me? I am the Lone One! People think I am a monster wanting to kill you and your family!" I look down and sigh. I step forward and hug him tightly.

        "Kane, I trust you with my family's life," I say stepping back, placing my hand on his right cheek, feeling the scar under my palm, "if the people cant see it, then they can just live witht he fact that you will be my husband," he smiles faintly as I grab his hand and go to continue patrolling. I freeze before I even take a step.

        Surrounding us is shadows with glowing white eyes, making soft hissing sounds. Kane steps in front of me, glaring at the shadows. One floats forward so it is a foot infront of Kane.

        "Beware the Shadows," It hisses softly, "keep your loved ones close because we are coming and are aiming to kill," with that they all disappear in a hiss.

        "What?" my mother asks us after we tell her and my father the story of the Shadows. She looks over at my father, who is thinking, "are you sure they said exactly that?" I nod as my mother runs a hand through her black hair.
