Chapter 06

THE FOLLOWING morning, drenched in sweat, Brielle went back to the fountain. She witnessed something, and now her head hurts. Their perspiring bodies, nude. Those piercing eyes. All she wants to do is go back to her province. Her sleep issues kept her up at night. She was still getting used to it, but that scene tormented her constantly and turned into a nightmare.

What was it, specifically? She saw what, exactly?

She convinced herself that she wasn't seeing anything. She had witnessed the Emperor acting strangely before. She saw him mutilate someone, and even stranger still, she saw him bang on someone! She made an effort to forget everything, but it just wouldn't go away. As she sits in the surroundings of the fountain, she feels weak. She used a handkerchief to wipe her forehead before washing her hands by scooping water into her palm.

"What are you doing?"

Her sudden standing caused her to feel faint, but she quickly recovered. She was standing in front of a woman her age who was shocked by what she looked like. As she looked at her, the lady grinned.

"I will be right here with you, and my name is Winter."

Brielle exhaled with relief. She was certain that Winter had been sent by the Matron to lecture her. Thank goodness it isn't that.

Winter questioned when she saw the buckets she filled yesterday to water the plants: "What are you doing here at the fountain, and why are there buckets?"

"Ah, the Matron informed me."

"She gave you the instruction to fill the buckets?"

Brielle nodded modestly.

Because of what Winter said, Brielle felt bad. "That old woman, really. I did the same thing on my first day here. Good thing Caloy told me there was a long hose there to sprinkle," Winter said. That young guard who didn't even admonish her was the Caloy to whom she was alluding. "You don't actually need to do this; a gardener comes over on Saturdays and paints a fresh wall each month."

Brielle exhaled and mumbled, "Oh god." into the air. If only she could reciprocate what the old woman did to her, Matron would be content to leave her alone.

Winter said, "You're pretty shy," and took the water drum. We'll start working after I put it back.

Brielle couldn't even speak. She wasn't anticipating being played up at the Vassily palace by an elderly woman.

Winter paused, looking her direction as she said, "By the way." She continued before leaving her fully, "Don't ever go to that secluded chamber there. The palace firmly forbids us. The Emperor gets up his wrath easily, we don't want to get him upset. We need double caution when it comes to him. Emperor Massimo is the only Vassily son who regularly receives guests; I'll explain more after we reach the room."

Oh gosh.

Once more, Brielle felt unsteady. That's where she came from last night, and she seems to understand why coming there is prohibited, so Winter's warning was too late. A regrettable miracle is taking place. Why is her current luck so bad? She will just pretend it doesn't exist, but she can't give up and she has to work hard. In that room, neither Brielle nor anybody else she knew could be found. All done.
