taylor hummed walking into the diner, she smiled at the patrons and waved to max, who looked skeptical. taylor didn't mind, she had been in a good mood for days.

"you look happy." max smiled, amused how someone could be this happy at 8:30 in the morning.

"i am." taylor responded.

"what happened?" max asked her coworker. "good time in cali?"

"i guess you could say that."

"oh my god you slept with that awsten guy!" max laughed.

"i did not!" taylor defended. "we just uh," taylor looked to her flats. "we got back together."

"and you didn't sleep with him?" max questioned. "wow."

"what?"

"i'm just saying, he lives in los angeles, you live in houston. when's the next time you're gonna see him? i would've slept with him."

"okay, but that's you. we aren't like that." taylor explained.

"okay, but elle." max threw back. taylor grabbed her notepad and pulled an apron on, giving max a death glare.

"elle wasn't an accident, if that's what your asking."

"so y'all planned her and he still ran out."

"i'm not explaining my relationship to you." taylor responded, crouching down to find a pen.

"what're we talking about?" kyle asked walking over to the counter.

"taylor and her shitty boyfriend."

"maxine williams so help me god," taylor called from under the counter. "where are the goddamn pens?"

"so y'all got back together?" kyle asked.

"yeah we did. where are the pens." taylor groaned, standing up.

"congratulations, and here." kyle politely smiled handed elle a pen from his apron.

"thank you." taylor sighed in triumph.

her shift continued with max teasing her and kyle telling her to knock it off. normal patrons or passing by families came and went from the restaurant, everything as normal. that was until the door opened and taylor heard heels clicking on the tile. taylor turned to see a woman with blonde hair, cut perfectly to her shoulders, blue eyes and tanned skin walked in. she wore a white sundress that went to her knees.

the woman looked around until spotting taylor, who had a puzzled look on her face. the woman's face lit up. the woman clicked her heels walking towards taylor who was leaning against the counter from the back.

"hello!" the woman greeted, bubbly personality at the fore front. "are you taylor marten?" she asked.

"uh yeah, that would be me." taylor hesitantly replied.

"oh goody!" the woman clapped her hands together. "don said you'd be here."

the mention of taylor's father made her stomach drop. she hadn't talked to her father in six years. she cut all ties with her father the second she could.

"i'm sorry, who are you?"

"oh! silly me, i'm emma marten, i'm don's wife." she introduced herself. taylor didn't know her father was remarried, then again, he didn't know she was a mother.

"nice to meet you."

"it's a pleasure to meet you in person! don told me about you, and after hearing of your falling out, i wanted to meet you myself. i was wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner this friday?" emma asked, smiling.

"i, uh, sure?" taylor replied. she said yes because she felt like she had to.

"oh great! i can't wait to see you there! um, is 7:30 sharp good?" emma asked politely.

"i can check with my supervisor, but i'm not entirely sure. i just got back from a trip to california, so i don't want to get fired or anything, you know?"

"oh you're right! here, here is my number," emma wrote her number down on a small gum wrapper, trident bubblegum, and handed it to taylor. "i hope i'll see you there! text me if you have any questions!" and with that, the woman waved, turned and click-clacked out of the diner.

"shit." taylor whispered, rubbing her temple "shit!" she kicked the counter.
