dinner with taylor's father and new wife went as well as she thought it would.  right off the bat, her father insulted her.

"i see you dyed your hair, taylor." he sternly said. "it was better blonde."

"i like it! i think she looks very pretty." emma deflected, giving taylor a weak smile.

"thank you, emma." taylor mumbled.

"speak up, taylor."

"thank you, emma." taylor replied louder. the tension in the room was thick. taylor and her father were in a glaring stare.

"okay!" emma smiled, clapping her hands together, earning the attention of the two. "i think we should head to the table, yes?"

"i guess so." don grumbled. they made their way to the large table that taylor knew all too well. she had many arguments at this table, remembering her brother just sitting back and taking a sip of water to ignore the situation. taylor and her brother were close, but he moved to new jersey with his girlfriend a few years ago, so she never got to see him.

"so taylor!" emma turned to face the woman sitting on the left center of the table. "you told me you went to california last week! how was that?"

"why did you go to that shit dump?" her father countered.

"i went to visit awsten for his birthday. and it was very nice." taylor calmly replied. "we went to disneyland."

"you're a waitress, how did you afford that?" her father scoffed.

"awsten bought the four of us tickets."

"so who else was there?" emma smiled.

"um, just me, awsten, his sister and elle." she mumbled the last part. she kept elle far away from her side of the family. her father was a rich businessman with an obsession for validation and appearance.

"pardon?"

"it was awsten, his sister gracie who i used to babysit, my daughter elle, and i." taylor replied slightly louder.

"your what?!" her father yelled. "since when do you have a child?"

"donald," emma calmly replied, trying to calm her husband.

"no! i want to know why i was unaware of my grandchild. it isn't that awsten guy is it? he's not the father, right?"

"he is, dad. awsten is a great father, by the way." taylor replied through gritted teeth. of course, was only in elle's life for two months, he got along quite well with her. don scoffed.

"i can't believe you had a child and didn't even tell your own father."

"i can't believe you got married and didn't tell your own daughter! i bet you told nick! he was at the wedding, wasn't he?" taylor shot back.

"yes well nick isn't fooling around with some kid with no ambitions! at least nick remains a part of this family!" don yelled.

"you always put him above me! i was never good enough for you! don't you understand that that's why i left?!" taylor felt her eyes welling with tears. "i left because of you!"

"i raised you with dignity, and you're whoring yourself out to the first guy who even glanced at you. you're not even married, taylor."

taylor was taken aback. she felt like sobbing right then and there.

"donald marten!" emma snapped, slamming her fist on the table. "taylor has been nothing but kind to you all evening and you are insulting her and making her cry before the food is even here. you wanted a relationship with your daughter, and i'm sure you want one with your granddaughter, so suck it up and be a respectible human being!" emma pointed at her husband in anger. don looked stunned. "taylor, i apologize for his behavior. i would understand if you would want to leave, but i would please ask you to stay for dinner."

"thank you emma." taylor whispered, emma gave her a sympathetic smile in return.

don stayed quiet throughout the meal while emma got to know taylor better.   the two seemed to get along quite well.

"oh i almost forgot to mention, i know it's a month in advance, but i would really enjoy it if you came to my birthday party on the 15th of next month. you could bring elle along as well! of course, i understand that your boyfriend lives in los angeles and it's the day after valentine's day, but i would really appreciate it if you came." emma told taylor.  after some thinking and a mental sigh taylor replied.

"i'll be there." she smiled
