Out Tonight

I had slept on the floor right next to Ned's bed... I open my eyes to the grey ceiling before sitting up and staring into nothing. I look over at Ned who's asleep, but I grab my bag and head out the door... I walked up the stairs and opened the door to the roof, walking onto it and sitting on the ledge, the sky was very cloudy but I could still tell the sun was coming up... I didn't want to go back home... In fact, I dreaded it... The wind blows lightly and I feel New York's autumn air all around. The tree leaves were all different shades of fall, and normally I would like the view but it only felt solum. I sigh and sit to the side, laying down on my back on the ledge. The clouds moved slowly above and made time feel like it was moving slower than usual. I stayed there for what felt like forever before I got a notification and put my phone to my face. It was a text message of one of the jobs I applied to asking for an interview just before lunch time. I quickly sat up, "Oh sweet." If this interview went well, I could finally quit the Daily Bougal. This job was a scientist/engineer looking for an assistant. I've always wanted to help others and my skills could probably help a lot. Finally some good news.

I change into my Spidey suit and then jump off the building, doing my usual neighborhood Spider-Man things. Swinging and stopping a drug deal, I swing past my apartment, feeling my stomach sink a little bit I quickly distract myself. I keep myself busy until landing on top of the small building where my interview was. I then open the door and quickly go into the bathroom and change into my street clothes. I walk and then go down the concerte hallway to the door of where the text message told me to go. I knock and open the door slowly, "Hello?"

A man in a lab coat and glasses looks up from his blueprints, "Peter! Right?" He asks. I come fully into the space and close the door behind me, "Yes, that's me." I say, with a welcoming smile. The lab around me had a dark grey concrete flooring and wires all over the ceiling. Along with an open space with a center table but then many other stations around with microscopes and test tubes and all sorts of science tools and materials. It was a really nice space for just one person. The man comes up to me and takes my hand, shaking it, "I'm so happy you're here, your resume is the best I've seen... You worked alongside Tony Stark at one point?"

I nod, "Yes I did. It was a great experience."

"I'll bet... Heh, I'm no Tony Stark but the work I do here is going to change the world."

               "Yeah?"

"Yes, here, come into my office." The man says, usuring me to follow him before we walked into his office which was very messy with papers all around as well as a white board with extensive blueprints. "Sit down, sit down." he says, sitting down behind his desk, trying his best to make some space. I sit down on the chair in front of him and set my bag down at my side. "Oh! I haven't even introduced myself, I'm Otto Gunther Octavius, but just call me Otto--or if you like formalities, just call me Doc."

"Doc, it's great to meet you. I've been looking for a job like this for some time."

"You were a photographer before this?"

"Well-yeah... I really started it because I needed some money but after taking pictures for a while... I would say they've grown on me. Not as much as what you do though. That's where my real passion is."

Otto looked over me, thinking then smiled, "What I'm focusing on here is making mechanical limbs for those who have lost theirs... I'm trying to figure out if they can control it just like a real arm, with their mind and reflexes."

My eyes widen, "You're thinking of some nero and robotic base technology?! That would be ground breaking." I say, seriously amazed.

              "I know! Thank you."

"Think of everyone this technology could help-"

"Peter, say no more. You're hired."

              "... Whoa, really?"

"Well, I figure I can just fire you if it turns out you know nothing about physics or robotics."

"Right." I say with a laugh.

              "We start now."

              "Uh-right now?"

"Yes, go get a lab coat."

I smile and get up from the chair and go to get a coat. Once I do, I set my backpack at the door and then meet Otto at the center tabel. He catches me up on his engineering and research. He explains that he's lost about certain parts and as I give suggestions Otto's smile becomes wider and more giddy. Almost like a kid. It seemed like he hadn't ever had a partner before... "I find it hard to believe you've never worked with anyone before."

"Oh, that's because that's not true... My old partner was... Well, we didn't exactly see eye to eye. In fact, I did most of the work. So... I left."

               "Oh... I'm so sorry."

"It's fine, Peter. We're here now."

I give him a sympathetic smile before we both start going to work. I separate some samples while Otto starts working on his robotic arm. We work for a few hours before he tells me that it's for me to go for the day. We exchange our goodbyes and I head out the door. Changing back into my Spider-Man suit and swinging through the city. I meet up with Yuri at one of Hammerhead's bases and we charge in, trying to shut down this base and find proof of Oscorp selling them weapons. It was a tough fight but when it was over, there were only weapons we confiscated but nothing more. At this point, the moon hung high in the sky. I swing back home and slip in through my window, shutting it quietly. I pulled off my mask and sigh, I had almost forgotten the reason I didn't want to come back home. I change out of my suit and into a purple t-shirt and black sweats when I am startled by a knock at my door. "Hello?" I ask and then MJ opens the door, walking in. "Oh hey-"

              "We're going out tonight."

"What?" I panic, my heart nearly jumping out of my chest.

"Clear your schedule because we are hanging out. Tonight." She says, when I don't answer she adds, "If that's alright."

I hesitated but wasn't in control of the words that then slipped from my mouth, "Yeah... Where do you want to go?"

"Well, you chose what subway last time so... I'd say it's my turn." MJ says.

"Right... It is your turn..." I smile a little.

"Ok... I'm going to get dressed... See you in a sec." she says, before leaving where she came and going into her room.

I'm left looking at the spot she stood just a moment ago... I sigh... Why did I say yes?
