I shut my door behind me and let out a shaky breath. Why am I so awkward? Shit, was that awkward? I don't even know. Dani and Olivia told me that to rekindle Peter and I's friendship that we should do something together like we used to... Dani also said that if I was confused where my feelings lied, I could use tonight to figure it out... But how could I figure it out if I don't even know what feeling I'm looking for?!? It's fine. I already said it. It was happening now. Good thing I didn't give myself the chance to hesitate earlier. There was no room for hesitation.
I put on a fuzzy cream sweater and grey pants with a black winter coat as now it was chillier in New York these nights. I then take my hair out of its bun and let my hair fall into its natural part, my curls framing my face. I take a breath in... Why did I care so much about how I looked? It didn't matter. Peter has seen me at my worst, we live together... But he never cared... So why do I care? Whatever. I leave my room and slide my phone into my back pocket as I wait at the front door. It felt like maybe Peter was taking too long, but just as I thought that he walked out his door. He was wearing a dark brown winter coat with a black shirt and black pants, his hair fluffier than usual, probably the cause of being out all day. I see him take me in, as he takes in a breath and gives me a small smile. "Ready?" I ask, returning the smile.
"Yeah."
Then we go. Walking down the street and to the subway entrance, something we hadn't done in a while. It felt like new but nostalgic at the same time... We head down the stairs, smelling that familiar cigarette smell as I tugged my coat tighter around me. As we walked in the crowded hall, our hands brushed and I felt a ting of nervousness and Peter then put his hands in the pockets of his coat. Looking down as he walked... I stop at the subway map once more and Peter stops at my side. "Maybe we should take the red track. And see where it takes us." I say, looking over at him. He makes eye contact with me and nods a little, "Yeah." I could tell he was strained... I needed to get him to loosen up somehow... We get on the train and hang onto the pole together. I find the movement of the subway to be relaxing as I ask Peter about his day. "I got a new job." He said, looking down at me.
"No way! What kind of job?"
"An engineering one. I'm actually doing what I'm good at."
"That's great, Peter."
"I'd say so." He smiled, "What about you?"
"I'm still looking... But I think I want to be a reporter... Or something along those lines."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"I think you'd be great at that... I'm assuming you'd be reporting-"
"Murders-" We say in unison. I smile with a small laugh, "And conspiracies."
"What else?"
"I want to help solve cases with my reports."
"I love that... I hope you find what you're looking for."
I look at him, "Me too..." After I stare for too long he looks away and starts speaking about the surroundings but I only stare... Could he just look at me?
The train stops and Peter and I exit, going up the stairs back to the surface. The cold breeze hits and I wrap my arms around myself as we walk. I looked up at this building, it had a neon sign with two Champagne glasses clinking. That's when I realized I hadn't even had dinner... I was just distracted earlier. "Have you eaten?" I ask, looking back at Peter.
