Camila's POV
Today I met my new neighbor who was to say the least a little grumpy and a little weird too. Like he wouldn't stop staring at me but then again I am also a little weird so who I am to judge?
Oh where are my manners? Hi! I am Karla Camila Cabello Estrabao but people call me Camila. The only person who calls me Karla is my mom when she's angry so I know that when I hear that name I'm in trouble. But thank god I haven't been in trouble lately.
Kids at school call me weird because sometimes I mix words in Spanish and English and since they are just stupid unavenced children they think I am from mars or something but not from Cuba.
I found Shawn intriguing to say the least, but above all he seemed sad, like a piece of his soul was left behind where he used to live. Before they moved we had dinner with the Rayments AKA Shawn's grandparents and they explained and told me a little about them but especially about Shawn. Apparently I wasn't the only 8 year old who could play piano. Throughout the course of dinner I learned a lot about Shawn and was intrigued by this person I hadn't even met.
When he walked out of his porch and looked at me I felt like the wind was knocked out of me. His hazel eyes bore into my soul and his curly hair seemed so soft. He seemed annoyed and I wondered if I had woken him up by playing guitar.
See just like Shawn now I was raised mainly by my mom. My dad was abusive towards my mom and me. So when my mom found out she was pregnant she packed us up and we moved here from Miami and again much like Shawn we live with my grandparents but not because we can't afford a home but because there is no reason for us to buy a home when we all get along so well here. Because of my dad's abuse I have constant nightmares and go through therapy twice a week while my mom goes three times a week. Because of nightmares I usually wake up in the middle of the night and when I can't go back to sleep I usually play guitar on the front porch. I usually don't wake anyone up but it seems like I did today.
When mom got home she said we were having dinner with the Reymant's tomorrow night something inside me stirred up in hopes of seeing Shawn tomorrow.
I was laying in bed when I heard a soft piano out of my window. I rushed to my window and opened to see Shawn seated on his front porch softly playing his keyboard not too loud to wake anyone up but also loud enough for someone who is already awake to hear. I stand there looking out the window enjoying the soft notes and watch as his small fingers hit the perfect notes. With time he starts to hum a melody that I was humming the day they got here. I watched as he wrote something down on a leather bound journal and then placed it on the chair next to his. Going back to playing he started to sing a couple of words along with the melody of the piano and the humming.
I watch with wide eyes as this boy my age basically writes a song in the middle of a cold night. After about 2 hours he packs up and heads back inside. All the blinds in my windows are up to illuminate my room during the day and let the sun bring it's light and warmth to my room.
I walk over to my desk to write something in my journal and I get startled by the blinds of the window in front of mine suddenly opening revealing Shawn with slight dishevelled hair seated on his desk much like mine also writing something down.
I don't think he notices me until he looks forward and sees me looking at him through my window. I rapidly look down at my journal hoping I didn't just got caught staring at my new neighbor.I look back up and the blinds are drawn down not letting me spy on my weird new neighbor. I sigh and got back to bed hoping to have at least some sleep before waking up tomorrow.
I woke up the next morning early because my baby sister was crying and I don't think my mom got to her before she woke me up. I got up and walked into her room to see my mom trying to soothe her to stop crying.
"Hey hun, sorry she woke you up, her teeth are growing and the chewing toy fell." My mom explained. I waved her off.
"It's fine mami, I just came to check up on her." I smile at my baby sister who is gracefully chewing on her toy.
"So... Shawn," My mom inquired.
"What about Shawn mama?" I ask.
"What do you think? Can you guys be friends?" My mom asked me to try in be friends with the peculiar kid next door and until now I only saw obstacles to it but why not try? I've always liked a challenge.
"I'll try my best mama." I assure her. She gives me a smile and we go back downstairs to prepare breakfast.
The day goes by and the only sign of Shawn was the sound of his keyboard playing from his room. It was around 7:06pm when they arrived here for dinner. I was helping my mom set up the dinner table when they walked in. Mrs.Mendes, Mr.Reymant, and Mrs.Reymant were all talking with my mom and grandparents. Even baby Sofia and Aaliyah were getting along. It was only me and Shawn who were both standing there awkwardly looking at each other.
"Hun, why don't you go show Shawn your guitars and you keyboard in your room? I heard Shawn likes music almost as much as you." My mom grinned.
"Sure." I shrugged. "Follow me." I head upstairs with Shawn closely behind me. I open the door to my room and let him in.
I show him my 3 guitars my grandparents got me and my keyboard.
"This is really cool." Shawn's pipped up as he Shawn my yellow electric guitar. I had yet to learn rightfully how to play it. "Can I?" Shawn looked back at me then back at the guitar. I nodded and watched him pick up the guitar and placed it on his lap preparing to play.
"Thought you said you didn't know how to play." I say amused.
"Well... I can play but only some cords not like a whole bunch." Shawn shrugged and started playing and let me tell he can play! He was playing a Taylor Swift song called Afterglow.
"A little?! You can play!" I exclaimed. I move to the piano and started playing along and in no time we were singing Afterglow in perfect harmony.
My family always told me I was too smart and talented for my own good sometimes and they were right. While other kids are outside playing and running I am seated on the front porch playing. People say that for an 8 year old I have a lot of talent but I have extreme anxiety about playing in front of people but that was not the problem with Shawn. Somehow a couple of 8 year olds feel comfortable with each other.
We finish the song and look at each other.
"Woah... damn you can sing Camila." Shawn exclaimed. I laughed and nodded my head.
"Well I am not the only one." I said looking him in the eye.
"Yeah." Shawn sounded unconvinced but chuckled. "Nice meeting you Cabello." Shawn grinned.
After that night everything between us was good. We went to the same elementary school, middled, and now how school. We are still best friends but ever since we met that day I've had this feeling that started with as a little flame and now as I see him walking down the halls of high school with his arm around Hayley fucking Baldwin I want nothing more than to kiss him right then and there but we have some issues.
Now that you know the story of how we met, how about I take you on the journey of our friendship and me falling for my best friend who calls me kid and says I'm like a little sister to him?
Oh! and brace yourselves is going to be a long ride!
