Introduction
Back in 2010, a former friend who had read the first draft of my book, Disavowed (also on Wattpad) challenged me to write something more lighthearted. I say ‘former friend’ because I thought Disavowed was lighthearted. But it wasn’t comical, which may have been what she meant.
My response was to sit down and write a piece called “Go Figure” (the first one in this collection). “Go Figure” and several of the other chapters here were published in my hometown newspaper on a monthly basis, which should explain why you see mentions of Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. (And if I had to pick my personal favorite, it would be “Gloria!”)
To write these pieces, I created a little persona around my pen name, ‘Mary Schwester’, who I envisioned as a wacky past-middle-age housewife. Full disclosure: though wacky and past middle age, I am not now and have never been a housewife. The Dear One mentioned in my pieces was my dear mother. Also full disclosure: I lost a lot of weight since I wrote this. But that’s for some other book.
No, the cover picture is not me!
