"You ever taken the lead on a case before?" Madeline asked Ava as they walked down the hospital hallway.
"Not yet," Ava replied, her voice quiet but tinged with determination.
"Well, today's your lucky day," Madeline said with a small smile, handing her the iPad.
Ava looked down at the screen, nodding slightly. She took a deep breath as they approached the patient's room.
Inside, a couple sat anxiously on the examination bed. Ava gave them a polite smile. "Mr. and Mrs. Harris, I'm Student Doctor Curry, and this is Doctor Sanchez," she said, motioning toward Madeline.
"I'm Lisa," the woman said, offering a nervous smile.
"Matt," her husband added, his arm protectively around Lisa.
"So, you're 13 weeks pregnant and experiencing three days of abdominal pain?" Ava confirmed, glancing at the iPad.
"That's right," Lisa said, shifting uncomfortably.
"Have you ever had pain like this before?"
"No," Lisa answered quickly.
"Okay. I'm going to examine you, if that's all right," Ava said. When Lisa nodded, Ava gently pressed her fingers against Lisa's abdomen, testing for any tenderness. "Have you had any bleeding?"
"No."
"Any complications with this pregnancy so far?"
Lisa shook her head, but Matt leaned forward, his voice low but emotional. "No complications, no. I mean, not with the pregnancy. For years, doctors said Lisa could never get pregnant. We tried, we prayed, but nothing worked. Then one day, it just happened."
Lisa smiled softly at his words. "They said something about the shape of my uterus. They did a bunch of tests. But whatever it is, it doesn't matter. We finally have our miracle baby."
Madeline gave her a warm smile. "That's amazing," she said gently. "But just so we're thorough—did they ever specify what about your uterus was unusual?"
Lisa frowned, shaking her head. "No, not really. They just said it was shaped differently, but it doesn't matter anymore."
Ava glanced between Lisa and the iPad, her expression shifting into one of clinical caution. "So, the thing about human anatomy is that even when things may seem like a miracle—"
Madeline cut in quickly, her tone smooth and reassuring. "Before we get into anything further, I think we should run some tests. We'll check your bloodwork and send you for a Doppler ultrasound to get more information. Does that sound okay?"
Lisa relaxed, nodding. "Yes, that's fine."
"Great," Madeline said with a kind smile. "We'll be back soon." She ushered Ava out of the room, keeping her expression neutral until the door shut behind them.
