Chapter 3:
"That's not possible..." Rina laughed nervously, "You can't be pregnant... right?"
"I... I don't know..." Mizuki stammered, "Isn't throwing up and fatigue symptoms of pregnancy?"
"Well, yeah, but throwing up and fatigue can be symptoms for lots of other things..." She pointed out.
Mizuki took a deep breath, attempting to calm herself. There was no use in freaking out over speculation. Still, if she was pregnant, she wouldn't be able to participate in the Olympics. It was her lifelong dream and she might miss out on it. There was also Kei, her devoted husband, who was preoccupied with so many stressful and time-consuming things... If they had a baby right now, their whole world would turn upside down.
Were they prepared for that?
"We can ask the doctor to run some tests to confirm..." Rina suggested.
"That's true..." She murmured softly.
"I know blood tests take a day or two so if you want, we can stop by the store later to buy some pregnancy tests to really confirm it..." Rina hugged Mizuki reassuringly, making her feel a lot better.
"Okay..."
After the doctor came back, Mizuki expressed her pregnancy concerns to him and he proceeded to do a blood test. He mentioned that the definite results wouldn't be back until the next day so he recommended that she rest at home. His initial diagnosis of her current health state was that she was physically overworked and mentally stressed, causing her symptoms and poor condition.
After a few more medical tests, the doctor informed the coaches of her diagnosis (leaving out the pregnancy concern) and they urged her to rest at home for the next few days. Rina drove Mizuki to the store so they could purchase some snacks and a pregnancy test.
"Why are you holding 5 boxes of that?" Mizuki asked anxiously.
"Because these tests aren't 100% accurate so we need to buy 5 to make the results more reliable!" Rina explained.
What she said actually made sense.
After they arrived at Mizuki's apartment, Rina wanted to stay to take care of her friend but Mizuki insisted that she return to the arena for practice. After all, they were training for the Olympics, a special competition that happened once every four years. They were going to play matches against countries all over the world so they needed to be viciously prepared. Rina reluctantly left but not before reminding her to call if she needed anything.
Mizuki sluggishly placed the unopened pregnancy tests on her bedside table and scrambled on her bed. She stared up at the ceiling, her mind consumed with thoughts of her and Kei's potential... baby. What scared her wasn't just the responsibilities that came with raising a child... It was the fact that she actually wanted to be pregnant.
It sounded insane in her head.
Mizuki knew that she and Kei wanted kids but that was in the near future after they had established themselves in their careers. She always thought that they would start trying after she had retired from her volleyball career.
It would be too soon for that now but...
So what?
Eventually, Mizuki fell asleep thinking about what she and Kei's child would be like.
Passionate, bold, and optimistic like her.
Intelligent, honest, and charming like Kei.
