Maya

I put the cupcake that a male customer wanted into the bag, gently closing it.
"Here you go, sir," I smiled gently, bowing a little.
"Thank you," he bowed back a little, before turning and leaving. Mrs. Han comes up behind me, putting her hand on my shoulder.
She whispers, "Hey, that boy from yesterday is here again." I look forward and see Hongseok enter the bakery.
"Hey," I smile, putting my hands behind my back.
"Maya, don't give away free desserts!" Mrs. Han calls out.
"Don't worry, I am using my own money to cover it," I smile at her gently.
"What do you recommend?" I hear Hongseok ask, looking at the displays and in the glass.
"Personally, I am a cookie kind of girl, but I do love some of the lemon blueberry cake. It's a best-seller," I explain. My body stood stiffly, heart beating loudly in my chest, as Hongseok watched me intensely.
"I'll take that then, please," he smiles, putting a small bill in the tip jar, before trying to hand his card to me. I shake my head, using my own discount and money to pay.
"Let me get the cake packed up for you," I smile, while he nods and goes to sit next to Mrs. Han in the window. They begin to talk quietly, as I begin to package the food. Why does this boy have such an effect on me? I don't want romance when I am trying to heal. Then again, the heart wants what it wants. MAYA! Stop, this isn't what you need.
I cut the cake slice and place it in the small container, then placing the container in the small brown bag that lays on the counter.
"Hongseok?" I call his name a little, putting his cake gently down on the counter. He turns, sees the cake, and gets up.
"It was lovely talking to you, Mrs. Han," He smiles, bowing to her.
"Come back anytime, you are welcome back," she smiles, patting his shoulder.
He turns to me, "Maya, what time do you get off?"
Catching me off guard, I think for a second, "I get off at 12:00, why?"
"I want to walk you home," I choke a little upon hearing this.
"Are you sure? I can manage-," I start but he cuts me off.
"The city isn't safe for a woman alone," he states bluntly.
"Fine," I agree, sighing. He nods, turning towards the door, then turns back when at the door.
"Be ready then. I'll be here," he smiles, pushing the door with his back and struts out.
"You and him remind me of my daughter and my son-in-law when they met," Mrs. Han nudges me as she walks by.
"What?" I ask, confused.
"He would make sure that my daughter stayed safe and was home on time. They met in high school, but this applies to you too. My daughter played hard to get and wanted to be free at first, but he won her heart," she smiles.
"We barely talk, even if we live in the same building," I sigh.
"This is just the beginning for you two," she smiles, going into the small kitchen in the back of the bakery.
Was it only the beginning?
