In the chair next to me, Violet's leg was bouncing up and down rapidly. We were sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's office, finally, after Violet had procrastinated for a few more days. She knew she was just putting off the inevitable, but I still had to really push her to finally make the call. I was just glad she had told me so that I was actually able to come with her instead of her having to come alone.
I reached over and put a hand on her bouncing leg, trying to ease some of her nerves. She looked up at me from her phone, giving me a grateful smile, "Thanks. I didn't even notice I was doing it."
"Everything is going to be fine. You know that, right? It's just a normal doctor's appointment. Kind of." I gave her leg a gentle squeeze, before standing up and stretching a little bit.
"Oh, yeah. Totally normal and routine. Except for that one part where they have to check up on the other person that's growing inside of me right now. But, you know, no big deal." Violet was putting up a sarcastic front, but her leg was already starting to bounce again from the anxiety.
I stayed standing, shoving my hands into my pockets, "On the bright side, this is the only child we have to worry about now. Calum is finally on speaking terms with Michael again."
Violet laughed lightly, but I could tell she was relieved. Calum had left pretty much as soon as he accidentally overheard everything that was going on. Even though he hadn't yet smoothed things over with Michael, he had gone home anyway, understanding that the two of us just needed some space to deal with everything together. Violet had been really appreciative of that, so things were much better between the two of them, too.
I wandered over to the fish tank near our chairs, bending over and staring inside. I noticed one fish and gasped, "Holy shit Violet, come look at how big this fish is!"
A few of the other people sitting in the waiting room looked over in our direction, some shaking their heads. Violet tried to look mad, but I could tell she was on the verge of laughing, "Luke, sit back down."
I shook my head and walked back over to my seat, falling into it with a sigh, "I'm sorry, I'm just getting antsy sitting here."
Violet reached over and grabbed one of my hands, "Trust me, I am too. I just think that swearing in a doctor's office is probably frowned upon. For the record, though, I'm sure that fish was huge."
I just chuckled, "I'm telling you, that fish was some kind of mutant. I don't know what they're doing in these offices, but something weird is going on."
Violet was starting to let loud laughs escape at this point, trying but failing to regain her composure. Before she could, though, a nurse stepped out into the waiting room, looking around, "Violet?"
Violet cleared her throat, finally containing her laughter, "Yeah, that's me."
She gave me an anxious look as she stood up, walking towards the door to the observation rooms. I followed behind her, starting to feel my own nerves building up. When we got into the right room, the nurse finally turned to me, "So, I assume you're the father?"
