"i'm not afraid, if i could only put my mind to rest" - I Can't Feel / Yours Truly
--
-Violet-
About a week after Luke and I had gone to the doctor, I found myself sitting at the counter again staring at another number in my phone. This time, though, it was my mom's number. She still didn't know I was pregnant, and every second that passed that I didn't tell her made me feel so guilty. At the same time, I was terrified of what she was going to say when I did tell her. No matter how good things had been, there was no telling how she might react to this.
I was broken out of my self-destructive train of thought when a pair of arms snaked around my waist. Luke rested his chin on top of my head, "You know, the phone isn't going to magically make the call itself if you just keep staring at it. Technology hasn't advanced that far yet, my love."
I just sighed, locking my phone and putting it back down on the counter, "And what about time travel, did we figure that one out yet? I would love to flash forward to after I've had this conversation with my mom and seen her reaction."
Luke just laughed lightly, kissing the top of my head before opening the fridge and taking out the orange juice, "I don't think it's going to go as badly as you think. But I have been saying that for the past week now, and you have yet to believe me."
I frowned at him, "Look, until you've told your mom, you can't say a word to me about what I should be doing. We are both dysfunctional adults with complicated families, and I think that gives us a little bit of an excuse here."
Luke grinned as he poured his juice into a glass, "Sorry, Violet, but I have you beat. I'm planning on calling my mom right before I leave for work."
I rolled my eyes, "Yeah, planning. Just like I've been planning to call mine for a week. You're gonna chicken out just like I did."
He raised an eyebrow at me, "Really? You want to make this interesting?"
"What did you have in mind?"
He grinned again, wider this time, "If I tell my mom first, you have to come do trivia night with me at the bar down the street. And you can't weasel your way out of it this time."
I leaned back in my seat, crossing my arms over my chest, "Fine. But if I tell my mom first, you have to start watching the Bachelorette with me every week. It's seriously not the same without Sydney."
Luke stuck out his hand, "Alright, you've got a deal."
I shook his hand, grinning back at him and knowing there was no way he was going to tell his mom before I did. They had barely spoken since our engagement party when his dad hadn't shown up, so I had this in the bag.
I quickly changed for work in the bedroom, grabbing everything I needed for the day. When I went back out into the kitchen to start making a cup of coffee, Luke was sitting on the couch in the living room on the phone. I started brewing my cup, but stopped in my tracks when I heard the words coming from Luke's mouth.
He had another wide grin on his face as he looked at me, "I know, Mom, we're really surprised too. And excited, actually."
Shit. I just groaned as I started to put the cream and sugar in my coffee, waiting for him to hang up and start gloating. He finally hung up the phone and stood up, walking back to the kitchen, "See, now was that so hard?"
I frowned at him, "This was an unfair bet. You totally played me."
Luke shrugged, "Honestly, you make it too easy sometimes."
