"Daddy," Yu-jun shouted as he went on the run to find his dad, who was busy in their small kitchen finding the giant waxed candle shaped in the number three, " Can I?" He pointed at the vanilla cake that was covered in fondant confetti, a special gift from his friend who made when he started living at the apartment, she was a fellow baker on her own start up company. She has become familiar with the dad and son duo since she was also a single mother with her own son. When she heard her son, Mihyuk, talk about Yu-jun turning three, she couldn't resist giving her neighbor and friend a delicious freshly made cake.
"Not yet, we have to wait for your friend, Mihyuk, he's almost here, plus, I want you to enjoy your birthday with a friend."
Yu-jun understood and wondered away from the kitchen, running into his own room for a stuffed to play with.
A light knock interrupted his focus on the cake and divert himself towards the apartment's door. He spotted her with two bags of gifts.
"Sorry we took long, I needed to change out of my uniform and get dressed, plus, Mihyuk was ecstatic finding out that he could give Yu-jun a gift. Sorry I just gave you the cake and left to get ready," she apologized, as she came inside the small apartment with Taehyung's permission.
"Misun, you know that it's okay. Plus, you needed to get comfortable after a long day of work, and then you baked us a cake for free, come on, give yourself some credit."
She just smiled, "I should have done it earlier but cakes are always best baked daily. I hope you enjoy," she bowed down to greet the rest of Taehyung's family who were inside the empty living room.
Taehyung yelped a small 'aha' as he found the candles, "Mom, can you call Yu-jun, we may celebrate now," he placed the candle in the center. He turned to face his family and his close friend, "I appreciate you guys coming to celebrate his birthdays, it means so much to us. Especially you, Misun, thank you for your gift of a cake but I'm going to pay you whatever the cost is for a cake in your bakery," Misun insisted that it was a gesture of love and nothing more, they were practically family in her eyes, they've been together since he was sixteen.
"Don't bother, it's my privilege to make one, what's the point of having a baker best friend if she can't bake for you?" Misun bantered softly as Mrs. Kim came with both of the kids on each of her sides. "I am more than happy to make one for my best friend and his son, I'm willing to bake him a new cake each year, if I have to," she spoke as she made contact with Taehyung.
"Thank you," he whispered as Yu-jun approached his father.
Mr. Kim, reached for a lighter to start up the candle, which surprised the younger, this might be one of the birthdays that he may remember, he at the age were things are slowly accumulating themselves and learning more to what's around them. "Can you blow? Like this," Tahyung exhaled softly as he wanted Yu-jun to replicate his action, his grandma smiled as she watched the toddler try to copy his father's action.
"Try huffing like the big bad wolf from the little red riding hood stories," his grandma encouraged his son, which did indeed help out. Yu-jun was testing his ability to get some warm air out, making some progress. Mihyuk was even trying along which the adults all smiled at the toddlers attempts to blow air for the candles.
"Daddy, I can do it," he spoke as Taehyung held him closer to his side, they neared the kitchen table where the cake was, "I can try," he muttered to himself as he gentle blew hot air onto the wax structure.
The room was filled with an clapping, Yu-jun giggled as he saw the soft fog of smoke evaporate into the air, "Did you make wish?" His grandpa, Taehyung's father asked he reached for the toddlers arms to play with. All the toddler did was nod.
