That was the last time Eliza ever saw Lelia. Her father had to drag her out of her empty bedroom kicking and screaming, but he dragged her. And now they were in the car, driving from California to their new home in Kentucky.

The second she had plopped down in their minivan, she had opened her Wings of Fire book and blasted Hamilton through her earbuds, drowning out her father's chitchat and the noise of traffic whizzing by. She pretended that she was at home, and her mom was hugging her and singing along loudly in her beautiful voice, telling her about how she was named after sweet, kind Eliza, and Jake was teasing her and telling her spoilers about the book, and Angie was sitting in her lap, just barely fitting but still snuggled in with her. But she knew it wasn't real. And it could never be real again.
