Happy Thanksgiving! I thought I wasn't doing one of these, then I thought, "Eh, why not?" So, now we're here... This isn't like the other specials, with Marina being such a massive part of the book now, and I don't know where to go on in the other specials storyline. That one kind of ended with the Fourth of July... Maybe one day I'll do something else with that one, Idk. Anyways, this will just be when Marina is Thirteen, a few months before everything that has gone down in this book. Don't expect it to be suuuuper long. Enjoy!
Sorry if you don't celebrate Thanksgiving... I hope you enjoy the part anyway...

Marina
I hid away on the roof of our house. Scaled the side instead of grabbing a ladder so that no one would follow or know I was up here. It's dark, but despite that, it's still pretty early.
They're preparing a big meal tonight. They went out and killed a massive deer, got some bird, we're having a bunch of greens too. It's all for me. I'm turning fourteen soon, and they do this every year. I don't like it, if I'm honest. I just want to have an average meal with the people that are typically here.
Dad: You slipped away. I was worried.
I turn around toward Dad. He's standing in the middle of the roof.
Me: How'd you get up here?
Dad: I climbed. Did you think I was too old to climb?
Me: Kinda.
Dad: No, don't say that. I'm not getting old.
He sits down beside me.
Dad: Why are you up here, if you don't mind me asking?
Me: Same reason I hide away every year.
Dad: We're doing this for you.
Me: I know. I don't like having all these people around, though.
Aj, Ana, Louis, Daniella, Ruby... Too many people for me.
Dad: I don't like a lot of people around either. Maybe for different reasons than you, but I don't.
I don't like it because it's just too many people for me. I'm not social enough for these kinds of things. I can talk to people, but I can't handle it when it comes to a big get together. Dad just gets nervous that someone will kill someone because it's easier to hide a knife or a gun in a group.
Dad: One more time.
Me: One more time?
Dad: Yeah, then I'll never make you do it again.
Me: I don't want happy birthday sung to me.
Dad: Fine. Then we're celebrating, um... Thanksgiving!
Me: Thanksgiving?
Dad: Yeah, it happens around this time. You eat and be thankful for not being dead.
Me: Really?
Dad: It was a holiday before Walkers.
Me: Oh.
Dad: Kind of forgot about it, not going to lie. I had other things on my plate. Like where I was getting my next meal, where I was hiding out for a storm, how I was robbing a group.
Me: As long as everyone knows that I'm not the center of attention.
Dad: I'll stay with you if that makes you feel better. They're not just going to forget.
Me: Can you?
Dad: Yeah, of course.
He stands up and holds out a hand to help me stand.
Dad: Now we have to find a way down before your Mom gets worried.
We found our way down, joined the party, ate and laughed, played games, etcetera... I may not have wanted to be there, but I enjoyed it... And I will always cherish it...
