Marina

Brooklyn has been quiet. I've tried to get her to speak from time to time, but her answers are always short. I don't really know what's going on in her head, but she's upset. Whether she's mad at me, mad about the situation, or just worried, I don't know.

We're close. We've been walking for hours now, and I recognize most of where we are.

Me: So. What are we going to do?

Brooklyn: This is your plan.

Me: Yeah, but Dad said to listen to you.

Brooklyn: Which you didn't do.

I don't think she's really paying attention. She's biting her lip and keeping her eyes forward. Her mind is elsewhere.

Me: Are you ok?

Brooklyn: Yeah.

Me: You don't seem ok.

Brooklyn: Weird, cause I am.

Me: Alright.

I decide to drop it. I'm struggling to figure out what is wrong. I know she's worried about Mom and Dad. Dad is her best friend, and they've gone through a lot together, and her relationship with Mom is great. But she didn't want to go help them. She's probably correct in thinking that they'll be alright, but everything seems off right now.

I feel like we're being played and falling right into the enemy's hand. Did that guy lie when he said everyone was against us? Was he just trying to get us to leave? Are Mom and Dad completely fine? Did Brooklyn gauge that all?

Me: Do you think that guy was lying?

She told me no while we were there.

Brooklyn: No.

She's hiding what she thinks.

Me: What do you think about what he said?

Brooklyn: He may have been told that to scare us. He may not actually know anything and was given false information to trick us.

Me: Is that why you wanted to keep going on?

Brooklyn: Until we knew for sure. But I promised your parents I'd keep you safe, and that comes first.

Me: Are you mad at me?

Brooklyn: No.

Me: Then what's wrong?

She sighs.

Brooklyn: I don't like losing, Marina. And if they come at us with that many people, we'll lose.

Me: That's what I've been saying.

Brooklyn: I'm aware.

She doesn't want to admit that we'll lose.

Me: You lose to Dad all the time.

I'm going to try to lighten the mood.

Brooklyn: Y/N is different. I don't care if I lose to him.

Me: Why?

Brooklyn: I don't know. He's on my side, and I love him.

Me: He's taken, Brooklyn.

Brooklyn: Shut up, you know what I mean.

Me: But Dad said you had a crush on him.

Brooklyn: When we were younger.

I decide to stop teasing her about it.

Me: Then why don't we just win?

Brooklyn: We will try.
