As Nayoko wipes the blood and mud from her eyes, there are only two things she canfocus on. First, the resounding joyous cries of men as bells of surrender toll in the distance.Second, the pale woman bleeding out in her arms. Though victory was practically ensured, as theKingdom soldiers had fallen and their leader lay dying in her arms, Nayoko could not swallowthe bile that rose in her throat.
"I'm glad it was you," the dying queen whispers, "I'm glad it was you who killed me."
Nayoko wanted to shout at the woman, to ask her why she betrayed the Archives and burneddown everything in the way of her conquests, but a choked sob swallows her words instead. Sheraises her hand and wipes at her tears but is stopped by a bloody hand clutching at her sleeve.
"Maybe in another life, we could've walked alongside each other," Alice breathes, "beenfriends, been more."And with that, she smiles and breathes her last breath
