Three months after the war ended, Nayoko dreamt again. She dreamt of holding Alice's hand during their school days. The hand grew thin till it was nothing but charred skin and bones, and when Nayoko looked at Alice she found her dull, milky eyes staring back. She woke in a cold sweat and reached for her knife, clutching it to her chest as she lay, not moving till rays of sunlight illuminated the room and she could hear Tanya's soft knocking on her door.
