Fred awkwardly excused himself from the classroom, leaving George and Adelaide alone.
Her eyes grew dark as she whipped around, pacing across the room, "I'm going to make them pay for what they did to me." Her hands were shaking in rage. George, having never experienced her in this state of anger, stepped towards her and grabbed her hands to steady them. She took a deep breath to slow her heart rate and breath.
He then cupped her face, lifting it slightly to look him in the eyes, "You have to think about this logically Addie, you can play this out and they'll never know you got your memory back. You can go back home to your family, and it'll be like it never happened." As much as he hated the idea of her going back to them, he knew it would be safer for her that way and she would still have her family.
Adelaide's took a step closer to him, lacing her fingers into his, "Is that really what you want?"
George hesitated, his voice caught as he couldn't bring himself to push any words out. His face began to slightly warm, but he felt a strong wave of confidence overcome him. They both recognized his silence as denial and without further hesitation George rushed forward, passionately pushing his lips onto hers. She tensed, surprised of his boldness, but she slowly melted into him and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
He pulled away, pressing his forehead onto hers, "No, it's not, but I want you to be safe." he whispered. Her cheeks grew warm, recovering from the most amazing kiss of her life and savoring the comfort she felt in his arms.
Adelaide then remembered something about her brother. She quickly stepped back, fear suddenly overcoming her face. "What is it?" George asked.
"Draco, my brother, and the others..They are furious with you and Fred. They're planning on something terrible. You aren't safe here, you have to go home now."
George chuckled at her flustered outburst, "I'm sure Freddie and I can handle the little pureblood posse."
This didn't calm Adelaide at all, she took George's hands into hers, "You misunderstand me George. They aren't planning on giving you a little scratch. Perseus isn't like Philip. He has no control over his emotions, he isn't as calculated as Philip and won't wait for a moment of solitude to take his chance. He,-" she broke off, fearing what she was about to say,
"He's going to try to seriously hurt you" she whispered. "He's grown so angry after Philip's arrest." she was trembling in fear. "Oh gosh, and I was going to let him." She covered her mouth and sank onto a seat next to her. "He made me hate you George, I'm so sorry. I won't ever be able to look at myself in the mirror anymore." She began crying into her arm.
George stepped towards her and sat on a desk. next to her, stroking her hair, "The mirror will be terribly devastated, not being able to see your beautiful face" She let out laugh, relieved and slightly surprised he didn't curse her and leave her to cry in the room.
He's too good for me, she thought.
"Listen Addie, we'll figure this out. Your brother can't just kill me in the middle of the hallway, and if he tries, I'll just push Freddie in front of me." at that moment Fred had walked in with a handful of pastries from the kitchen, "Wow Georgie, thanks, love you too."
George gave Fred a wicked grin, "I'm only joking."
"Dereck's just told me Draco is running around the castle like a madman looking for you, have you figured out what the game plan is?" Fred asked, shoving a pastry into his face.
George looked at Adelaide, "It's up to you, what do you want? I suggest for now you keep up appearances until we come up with a solid plan."
Adelaide nodded, "I'll have to for now..I'll try to deter my brother from attacking you and keep Draco at bay."
George looked up at Fred with a raised eyebrow, "You hear that Freddie, we have ourselves a double agent."
She gently rested her hand on George's, "I'll have to um.." she grimaced, "I'll have to be a bit close with Draco, he thinks we're getting closer."
George dramatically grabbed his chest, faking a hurt expression, "I see how it is Adelaide. I'll never be able to match his scrunched up, judgmental face and pompous strut."
Fred faked being defensive, "Yeah Burke, what's Draco have that my brother doesn't?" He threw a pastry at her.
They all laughed joyously, just like the day in Hogsmeade. Adelaide was glistening with a happiness she hadn't felt in a long time, but she was also conscious of the burning anger that sat at her core that longed to take revenge on Draco for taking her memories and treating her like a child. She also wanted to protect George and Fred from anything they were planning on doing to them.
"Before I leave, I have to put a few protection charms on you two. I couldn't live with myself if something happened." Adelaide said, pulling out her wand.
George cut in, "Well Addie, if your brother does try to kill us or use the Cruciatus Curse, you know a protection spell won't do a thing."
She drew in a sharp breath, the twins seemed like they didn't pay attention in class, but the two were uncannily brilliant and knew spells very well. They knew well enough that the protection spells they taught at Hogwarts wouldn't protect anyone from Unforgivable Curses. She'd have to tell them that her spell was slightly (entirely) illegal. It was a spell passed on through her family and told to no one else, not even the Dark Lord.
"You cannot speak a word to anyone about this spell. Afterwards, I'll have to erase your memory of the exact words, do you understand?" Her tone growing extremely serious.
The two twins gulped, looking at each other questionably, "Uh, Addie" Fred chimed in, "What sort of protection spell are we talking about here?"
"The less you know the better, but it is Dark magic. It won't hurt you or anyone else and that's all you need to know."
"Merlin's beard, you can't use dark magic on us it's illegal!" Fred exclaimed. George remembered his thoughts the night her brother had attacked him, this answered his question that she did indeed know and practice Dark magic. This made him a little unsettled, but also made her more attractive to him.
"This spell protects from Unforgivable Curses, and that's it. My entire family has it placed on them, and no one else knows about it. If they knew I were doing this they'd probably reverse the spell and kill me immediately." she frantically was building up the courage to do it on them.
Fred sighed in submission, "You scare me sometimes Burke, but go along."
She took a deep breath, "Muffliato" she pointed towards the door. She turned her wand towards the twins and muttered the protection incantation. A black spark shot out from her wand, encasing the two twins in a cloud of black. It spun around them like a tornado before dissipating out of the air.
The two's eyes were wide as they looked around, paranoid that they were just cursed or something. It felt wrong.
"I know it feels a little funny at first. The feeling will go away soon enough. Oh and also, Obliviate."
The twins had no recollection of the words she mumbled for the spell, but still had the strange sensation looming over them. It felt like there was an icy presence behind them.
"You'll be safe now, no killing curse, imperius curse, or cruciatus curse can hurt you. The coldness will go away after a cup of tea and you might not be able to sleep well tonight, so I suggest you take some sleeping draught. Tomorrow it'll completely settle in and you'll be fine."
George took her hand and gave it a squeeze, "Give us a signal when you are ready to discuss the plan and be safe."
The two made their way out the door leaving Adelaide alone in the room. She would have to go back to the snakes. She would have to put on the face and pretend like nothing had changed.
She took a deep breath and walked out the door.
