*Mads POV*

Today was the day. Today was the day of my mother’s funeral and we’d have to face my father. Aunt Julie promised that if he got out of hand she’d have him escorted off the premises. I had straightened my hair then pulled it into a simple ponytail and put on a plain black dress with a black cardigan overtop to cover my arm and plain black heels.

“Are you ready to go?” Josh appeared in the mirror behind me. He’d slicked his black and blue bangs out of his face. He was wearing a grey V-neck shirt with a plain white suit jacket over top and black dress pants. It was that or a black dress shirt and a bright red tie and black dress pants. I chose this outfit; it looked a bit more formal.

“You look nice,” I said.

Josh frowned. “You’re ignoring my question, are you ready to go?”

“Yeah just let me, uh, grab my phone…” I turned and was about to go grab my phone but Josh stopped me.

He dangled my phone in front of my face. “Already grabbed it. I know you’re worried about seeing your dad but I’ll be right beside you the whole time, nothing to worry about,” I nodded and took Josh’s hand in mine. We went to the main floor of his house where his family and Matt were waiting for us.

“Matty your tie is crooked,” I said. I went over to him and fixed it, my tongue sticking out as I worked. “There now you look more presentable,” I smiled.

“We should probably go now…” Corlynn said. Everyone nodded and we all went outside. Josh, Matt, and I were taking Josh’s car and Miles, Corlynn, and Sara were taking Miles car. We got into Josh’s car and he started the engine. We followed Miles car down the street and to church the funeral was being held in. Aunt Julie hadn’t really asked much of Matt and I except to bring some pictures of her over. Other than that she’d planned the whole funeral with the help of her husband and some of our other aunts. Josh pulled into the parking lot of the church and we all got out. We had to go in the back way to help with any last minute scrambling. Josh held my hand tightly and made sure I was right beside him the whole time. We were both worried about my father. He was unpredictable in this sort of situation. Matt disappeared through a door and we were left alone.

“If you need to leave early we can ok?” Josh said.

“I want to be there for Matt if not anyone else. He’s all I have now,” I said quietly. Josh nodded and kissed my forehead.

“You’re such a good sister. Staying strong for him,” Josh smiled.

“I am being strong for him but I’m not really sad. She was a terrible mother to me so I don’t feel much remorse for her,” I shrugged.

“Mads there you are! We need you to speak! Samantha isn’t able to make it so we need someone to speak!” Aunt Julie said as she rushed up to us. Samantha was my aunt and the closest to my mom besides Aunt Julie. Usually she was on business so we didn’t hear or see much from her.

“I don’t have anything prepared”

“Well on different circumstances I’d ask Matt but we all know that’s a big n-o”

“Um I guess I could try to get something together…”

“Fantastic! I have to go check on the flowers now!” Aunt Julie hurried off down the hall, shouting at people.
