Mads and Josh ----------------------------->
*Mads POV*
Today was the day. Today Matt and I were packing up most of my stuff and driving me to rehab. I woke up this morning an emotional mess. Everything just kinda hit me all at once, I wasn’t going to see Josh for a month and a half, I was going to rehab, and I had the most dysfunctional family ever. I cried when I woke up and cried when I showered and cried when we were packing. Matt would just awkwardly mumbled about going and grabbing something and would wait till I stopped crying. I managed to find a couple pictures of Josh and me together and stuffed them in a special bag by themselves.
“Mads?” Matt said quietly. I looked up at him.
“Yes?” I replied.
“I’m really going to miss you. The house is going to be really empty without you,” Matt smiled sadly. I couldn’t blame him, what kind of person wants to send their little sister to rehab right after their mom has died from committing suicide.
“At least you can have all the parties and girls you want over”
“I guess so…” I shoved the last of my things into my bag and swung it over my shoulder.
“That’s everything I guess,” I sighed, looking around my room. Pictures were missing from the shelves and my dresser was completely empty, along with my closet. Everything was so bare; my room didn’t look like home anymore.
“We should get on the road soon,” Matt was right, we had a long drive ahead of us. The rehab center Matt decided to send me to was far out in the woods and was like those camps I went to for a week during the summer when I was a kid and for a week you became best friends with these kids in your cabin and then never talked to them again. The difference between rehab and summer camp was I got 1 roommate instead of 6 and you didn’t necessarily get to have as much fun at rehab as you did summer camp. The food probably wasn’t as good either.
Matt grabbed the heavier bags of mine and left me with the not so heavy stuff. I gave Nala a kiss on her fluffy head and scratched her chin. I slowly followed Matt outside to his car. I handed him bag after bag to put in the trunk and backseat. I thought I was imagining it but when Matt looked up and over my shoulder I knew he had heard it to. I spun around and narrowed my eyes, trying to see better. Then I saw him and I burst into a full on sprint towards him. After what felt like miles of running I was wrapped around his body. My legs around his waist and arms around his neck.
“Hi baby,” Josh whispered. I don’t know why but I started crying right then and there. Tears were streaming down my face and soaking his shirt. I didn’t want to let go, I wanted to stand in the middle of the sidewalk and cling to Josh like my life depended it.
“I love you, so much,” I choked out.
“I know baby and we’ll see each other again before you know it,” I pulled my face away from his neck and looked at him. He was smiling at me, but I knew by looking into his eyes that he wasn’t happy. Nobody was happy, why should we be happy?
“I just…I just don’t think I can last that long…” I whispered. I slid off him and stared at the ground.
Josh grabbed my shoulders and shook me gently. “Don’t you dare say that Madeline. You’re going to get through this and so am I then we’ll see each other again and it’ll be perfect. You can finish school and then we can leave. We’ll go wherever you want. We’ll go to China if you want ok? We’re getting through this and then we’ll be together…forever,” Josh leaned in and pressed his lips to mine. Our lips and bodies were so in sync. I’d never noticed that we knew exactly how to respond to one another. I felt a tear hit my cheek. We were both crying but we didn’t want to let go of each other just yet. I heard a car roll up beside us and the person inside honked. Josh and I reluctantly pulled away from each other, our eyes locking immediately.
