Evan's POV
"Okay, okay what happened is that Barbara called; She told me you were going to see Connor Murphy." Mom's laughter died down, a serious face replacing it. "Although it was kinda weird, she mentioned nobody else has visited him."
I nodded my head, agreeing. "So, when is your shift over? I was thinking we could m-maybe spend some time together?" I checked the time on my phone. "It's only 2:24," I said half smiling.
It would be cool if mom and I could spend more time with each other. She started getting later shifts and the house has been empty without her. It felt even more empty than when dad left.
"Sorry hun, my shift ends at eight. Maybe you could talk with your 'friend." When she said friend it was put in air quotes. "What's their name again?"
"My name is Veronica, Veronica Sawyer."
"Veronica; that's a pretty name. Do you know anything about the 'Connor Murphy' Evan told me about? I know his age and stuff, but what was he like socially?" Again, doing air quotes except around 'Connor Murphy'
I didn't want to explain that he was the 'school shooter drug addict.' The truth will surely send away the likelihood of meeting him. Then, I realized if mom thinks he's just an acquaintance she possibly could not care. So, I stayed quiet.
"He was okay, I didn't know Connor well but he seemed like a nice kid. I had my friend group and he might've had his." Veronica lied.
Wonderful, she thought I still knew him, fern.
"Mom!" I yelled," I merely k-k-knew him."
"Fine," she rolled her eyes, "I have to leave, I was here for too long." Mom said as she walked out the door
It was just Veronica, JD's inanimate body, and I.
"So, how'd you get your cast? It's been eating away at me for a hot minute." Veronica, who was now slouched back in a hospital chair asked.
That sentence sounded fine out loud, but I was internally breaking down. I clenched my left arm and my memories began to flood in.
