1993
I ran out of my house. I didnt know where I was going, or what I was gonna do when I got there, I just had to get the hell away from my house.
I heard yelling coming from a house down the street. I continued walking in that direction.
I saw a guy jumping out of a window. He hit the ground and ran from the house.
I dont know why I chased after him. I dont know why I'm doing anything today, all I know is that my father is drunk and my mother is gone and my brother is on the other side of the country.
Not that I blamed him. Our house was toxic. It took good pure things and bathed them in acid so that when that beautiful thing was spit out and rejected by it, it was left with nothing, it was nothing.
Or at least that's my experience with it.
I run up to the guy, I finally get a closer look at him.
He had dark hair. He was wearing a black t shirt and had a leather jacket on.
He didnt see me until I grabbed his shoulder. He turned around to see who it was.
"He-" when he saw me he fell silent. I just looked at him, hoping against hope he could help me in someway.
"Are you alright?" He asks me. At first I dont know what hes talking about.
But then I remembered what I must look like.
I had a bruise on my cheek and a black eye. My face was blotchy from crying, or trying not to cry and failing. That's how i got the black eye.
Even if i didnt have the bruises and I hadn't been crying I would probably look like a crazy person.
I had a constant case of bedhead and I have been told that my fashion sense was odd.
I just dont like looking like everyone else. I like to be memorable.
"I'm fine i just cant go back home." I tell him.
"Yeah me neither." He says.
"Where ya headed?" I ask following him to wherever he was going.
"No where in particular. I'm just walking and seeing where I end up."
"Can I join you?" He gives me a funny look but nods.
"What's your name?"
"Reggie. Yours?"
"Y/n."
"Favorite color?"
"F/c. What about you?"
"Red."
We continue asking questions until we reach a small diner.
He looks in the window a sec before heading into the diner.
"You coming?"
I nod and follow him.
We walk into a diner and he heads toward a table with three other boys.
He walks up to the boys and they all greet eachother.
I dont say anything, just inspect each of the boys.
The first one is wearing a pink shirt and a fanny pack. He seems trustworthy, like a good friend. The type of guy that would listen to you complain for hours and then give you advice.
The second one has dark hair. Hes sending a waitress across the room a wink. I look at her and she blushes. I roll my eyes at him and move on to the third one.
Hes wearing a blue sweater that doesn't have sleeves.
I point to the sweater. "What's the point in the sweater if it doesnt keep you warm?" I ask him.
The boys notice me for the first time.
"Umm... I dont know. I guess I just like the way it looks."
"People spend too much time focusing on what they look like. Dont ya think?"
I hold on the the strap of my purse.
"What do you mean?" The dark headed one asks. He gives me a smile that would make any other girl swoon. I'm not that girl.
"I mean that people are always so focused on how they look. And they dont even dress for themselves. They dress for others. It part of their facade."
"Facade?" The blonde one asks.
"The person that you show everyone else. You know, like how this guy probably spent half an hour on his hair and outfit just to try and get girls to like him." I say pointing to the dark haired one.
The rest of the boys laugh at the guy.
"She got you there bobby." The brown headed one said, "I'm luke by the way."
"Alex."
"I'm y/n." I say nodding my head.
"Well y/n, care to sit with us?"
Alex says. I nod and sit next to him on the booth.
Reggie sits across from me, next to luke.
Bobby is still flirting with the girl from across the room.
"You're trying to hard." I say stealing one of Alex's frys.
"Hey!"
I look at alex for a second and grab another fry, stuffing it my mouth before he can object again.
He rolls his eyes.
"I'm ordering you some fries of your own." He says.
"Not necessary. I dont have money to pay for them anyway."
"Its fine. Bobby's paying." Alex says with a smirk.
"No I'm not."
"Are too. I played last time and luke did before that and reggie did before that. It's your turn. Now I'm going to order this child her own fries so that she will stop stealing mine."
Alex stand up on the chair and steps over me.
When he gets to the floor safely he does that thing that gymnasts do when they put their hands above their heads.
I laugh and steal another fry when he isnt looking.
I turn to see reggie and luke staring at me.
"What do you think?" Reggie says.
"I like her. How much did you have to pay her to actually talk to you?"
"He didnt. Suprising I know." I say.
"Can we trade bobby for her?" Reggie says.
"Hey!" Bobby says but the other two ignore him.
"Depends. Do you play guitar?" Luke says.
"Not really. I play ukelele and I know a few chords on guitar but that's it. I can play piano too."
"Huh." Luke says. He reaches over and grabs a fry from Alex's plate.
"Hey!" Alex says.
"Hi." I say.
He turns to the waitress he was talking to.
"Can you make that three?" The waitress nods.
Alex steps over me again and sits down.
"Y'know you can ask me to move right?" I say.
"That's no fun though."he says.
I laugh.
"What's with the bruises?" Bobby asks.
Reggie punches him in the shoulder, luke puts his finger in his mouth and sticks it in Bobby's ear, and alex gives him a glare that would make satan himself cower in a corner.
"Eh, dads an insecure jerk who beats up his daughter to make himself feel in power." I say reaching for another of Alex's fries but he pulls his plate out of reach.
"I'm sorry." Luke says.
"Its cool. I'll be home free soon." I say back.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that I'm gonna get myself emancipated. I just need to figure out where I'm gonna stay, seedings I cant afford my own house."
"Good for you?" Alex says giving me a high five.
I return it and smile at him.
"How'd you run into Reginald over here?" Luke asks.
"We were both running." I say.
The guys nod and our fries get here. The waitress hands me a drink.
"Umm... which one of yours is this?" I ask them.
"Its yours. I figured you saved me from being stuck with these idiots all night so you deserve a soda." Alex says.
"Y'know I think your my favourite out of all of you guys."
"Hey! I'm the one who brought you here!" Reggie says.
"Yes but you didnt get me fries and a soda."
"That's fair." Reggies says and I laugh.
"Wait. In order whose your favorite?"
Luke asks.
"Umm... alex, reggie, you, and then bobby is at the very bottom of the list."
"What why?"
"You dont seem trustworthy." I say simply taking a sip of my drink.
"I- that's fair." He says giving up on what ever argument he was about to try.
I laugh a little.
"Do you write music?" Luke asks.
"Sometimes. Why do you ask?"
"I was just wondering. I mean if we're gonna be friends I was just wondering if you could help with songs and things. These guys get distracted easily." He says elbowing reggie.
"I feel attacked." Reggie says.
"You'll get over it." I say.
"I like her." Alex says.
"Good." I say.
"Do you have any songs that you've written that I can see?" Luke asks.
"Yeah." I reach into my bag and pull out a small brown leather notebook.
I hand it to him and he flips through it.
"You're really good." He says turning to the next page.
"Thanks. It started as poetry but then I started humming the words and it went from there."
He continues flipping through the notebook and the rest of us talk.
"I really like this one?" He says, turning the book to me.
"Oh I hate that one." I say.
"Why? It's amazing."
"Its less the song then the memories I associate with it." He nods.
"Well you have to sing it for us sometime." Reggie says looking at it.
"Fine."
