1993

My mom dropped me off at school. I didnt wanna be here but then again who did?
I put her headphone on and pressed play on my cd player.
I pulled her collar up, hiding half of my face.
I looked down at my outfit and got a little nervous. I was wearing skinny Jeans, a black and white striped long sleeved shirt that left my shoulders bare and an oversized brown leather bomber jacket over that.
The jacket was old and worn but i loved it.
Bobby had been making fun of how I dressed lately. The way I dressed wasnt even that weird. I just pared certain accessories that wouldn't go together. But I pull it off.
I walked into the building and headed straight for my locker.
I opened it and looked in the mirror.
I had braided my hair yesterday and was too lazy to wash it last night so i didnt.
This morning i wrapped the braid up to form a bun on the top of my head.
I grabbed her sketch book and headed to my first class of the day.
Art.
I loved art.
I sat at her canvas and aimlessly drew in my sketchbook.
"I like your boots Hazel." She heard a voice say.
I looked up at the guy.
Reginald.
I looked down at my boots to see which pair he was talking about. I had shoved them on without seeing which ones i had grabbed.
They were her old combat boots, they were splattered with blue green and purple paint.
The laces were frayed from her wearing the shoes so much.
"Thanks." I said cautiously.
Reggie was a nice guy but the guys he hung out with were jerks.
I was unsure if he was an actual nice guy or if he was just the nice jerk.
Reggie sat at the canvas next to me.
He was about to say something else when the teacher started class.
I put my sketchbook with her bag at my feet.
It was still flipped open, the drawing visible.
"That's really good." Reggie said, applying white paint to his canvas.
I nodded in Thanks.
I turned to the teacher.
"Paint how you feel."
Reggie raises his hand, "umm feel about what?"
"Anything, say... your home life, or your friends, or even a special someone."
"What if we have none of those things, or not very good versions of those things." I say.
Reggie nods looking at her.
"Well then paint how you feel about the person next to you." We both looked at eachother.
I knew very little about reggie except for what I observed.
"This will be due next friday."
I didnt get much done.

I was walking to my locker when I hear a voice behind me.
"Hey weirdo!" I turn to see bobby.
He was a selfish prick.
If I had to paint how I felt about him it would just be a big middle finger.
I ignore him.
I put my headphones on and open my locker.
"What so you're just gonna ignore me?"
I dont say anything.
"Come on dont be that way." He teases. I roll my eyes.
"What? You dont like me?" He fake pouts.
I dont look at him, just put my stuff in my bag and walk away.
"Hey! Its rude to walk away from a conversation!" He yells.
I give him the finger as I walk away and head out the door.
I sit outside the school, waiting for my mom.
After about three hours I decide to just walk home.
I decide not to go home just yet.
I walk around a bit before hearing someone behind me, "hey weirdo." I hear bobby say behind me.
Normally I would ignore him like I did earlier, but I was angry and tired.
"What the hell do you want?" I half yell at him.
"Wanna go to Kimberly's party with me friday?" He says suavely. Moving closer to me, he tries to put a hand on my waist but I push him away.
"No."
"What the hell do you mean no?"
"Gee, you really are dumber than i thought."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that you're a total jerk to me and now you wanna ask me out? No thank you. I'd rather burn in hell."
"That can be arranged." Bobby says, getting in my face.
"What's going on here?" I hear an unfamiliar voice say from behind bobby.
He slips a hand around my waist.
I try to push him away but he has an iron grip on my body.
"Just asking Hazel over here if she would go to the party with me."
I turn see Reggie and the other two of his friends.
"And I said no. Get the hell off me!"
"You're funny. She said yes." He smiles at me.
"No I didnt" I try to push him away but he just holds onto me.
"Let go of me!" I yell at him.
He refuses, after a second of struggling someone punches him in the side of the head.
I look over to see reggie, he shakes his hand, I see the bruises already forming on his knuckles.
He pulls me away from Bobby.
He has an arm loosely around my waist from forgetting to move it from when he pulled me away from bobby.
"Are you okay?" He breathes quietly.
I just nod, "umm... is your hand okay?"
I grab the arm that is not around me and inspect his hand.
"I'm good."
"You know I never took you as the fighting type."
"I guess you dont know me that well."
Someone clears their throat and we move away from eachother.
"Umm, hazel, this is alex and luke." I nod at them, I look over to see bobby, holding the side of his head.
"Reggie you just made a big mistake." He moves to reggie, but luke grabs his arm and alex steps in front of him.
"No you did." Luke says.
I knew luke when we were younger. We used to live across from eachother but when my parents divorced I moved into an apartment across town with my mom.
"Hey luke." I say.
He looks away from bobby and nods about me, his cold hard glare falling into a childlike smile, before his look turned back to bobby, the glare returning.
"You're out of the band." Alex says calmly.
"Why? And what makes you think you have that authority alexander?"
"Because you tried to force a girl to go out with you, forcefully and against her will, and now you're threatening reggie." I say.
This earns me a look of approval from alex.
"Whatever man. I didnt wanna be apart of this anyways."

Reggie insisted walking me home.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
"I'm fine Reginald."
"Just making sure."
He stops and pulls me into a hug. I freeze for a second because of how sudden and unexpected it is.
"I'll see you later." He says.
I nod and he smiles.
I turn to see my apartment building. I walk towards it and open the door but not before sneaking a look at reggie.
Hes watching, making sure I get in the house safe.
I smile to myself and go inside.

That next week reggie and I talked alot. I sat with him luke and alex at lunch.
Alex basically treated me as a best friend. He gossiped about things with me. I dont understand most of what hes saying because I'm not very culturally acclimated.
He helps me understand, making jokes about how I live under a rock. I dont live under a rock, I just never really concerned myself with that kind of thing.
Luke had taken to treating me like a little sister.
He started driving me to and from school, which I made clear he didnt have to do but he did.
He started after he found me outside if the school waiting for my mom for the third time that week.
I was in art class finishing my painting.
I hadn't really paid attention to what I was making.
I hadn't really known what it was myself until the teacher pointed it out.
"Very nice portrait Hazel."
"Thanks."
"You must really understand him."
"Who?"
She pulled me back from the large canvas so that I was looking at the full canvas.
In front of me was reggie.
He was in his regular flannel and leather.
Half if the picture was in vibrant color but it phased onto black and white from right to left, the only color on that side was the red of his flannel and the rosyness in his cheeks.
On the vibrant side he was in the middle of a laugh.
An expression that I've seen on his face countless times.
On the other half, the half with no color, there was an expression of anger, and almost sadness on his face. He looked fiercely protective. I dont know where I came up with this expression for him but then I remembered the walk home.
After he punched bobby this was the look on his face.
Anger, disappointment, and ferocity.
I hear a small gasp come from behind me.
I turn to reggie, hes looking at the painting with wonder in his eyes.
"This is amazing." He says.
"I didnt even realize I was painting you." I confess.
"Well that was the assignment." The art teacher says beside me.
"You had to write how you felt but you got part of it wrong."
"What do you mean?" I say inspecting the portrait.
"You painted how he felt... towards you."
I know my eyes brows together.
"Huh?"
"Well you had to have seen these expressions come from him before, towards you probably. You drew them in such detail."
Before I can say anything the bell rings.
I'm walking out when I feel someone grab my hand.
They pull me out of the school.
A blur of leather and flannel turns towards me.
"Yes?" I say after he looks at me for a bit.
He steps toward me, slowly but surely he gets closer, and closer, until we're so close I see every little detail of his eyes.
"What are you doing?" I ask him quietly.
He looks between my eyes and my lips, like hes trying to decide if hes really gonna do what hes thinking if doing.
"Reggie what's going on?"
His hands move to my waist, pulling me towards him.
My pulse quickens.
Normally I would pull away from someone if they did this but for some reason with him I dont.
He moves his head to the side a bit, leans in, and kisses me.
After a second I kiss him back.
I put my hand to the back of his neck, deepening the kiss. My other hand rests on his chest.
He pulls me closer and breaks the kiss.
"I loved the portrait." He smiles.
"Y-yeah, Umm I-I could tell." I stutter, my face becoming a deep blush color.
He smiles at me.
"Wanna just skip today?" He says quietly, pulling me even closer and resting his chin on my head.
"why not?"
