Chapter 3

BEEP BEEP BEEP

My mind is foggy and I can't comprehend what is going on. There's this incessant beeping that is quite annoying actually. For some reason my eyes won't open and my arm won't move. I want to stop that sound.

BEEP BEEP BEEP

What the hell is that sound??

I try reaching for it again when I hear voices. I freeze. Who would be in my room other then Ryan? But no, this voice is a woman's voice. I try to catch what shes saying through the annoying noise and my foggy hearing. "How long is she going to be like this?' the woman's voice asks filled with concern.

A male voice responds to her, "We are not quite sure, shes taken quite a beating ma'am. She has extensive bruising to her stomach and ribs. She has a concussion from the hit she took to the head. The swelling has gone down but her body needs time to heal."

The woman chokes on a sob, "I just can't believe she's been going through this since she was a child. What kind of monster beats an innocent little child?"

I tune them out and focus on my jumbled thoughts. So much is running through my head right now. I can't think straight.

Where am I?

 Are they talking about me?

And most importantly, How did they find out?

My head is filled with so many thoughts and it starts to hurt thinking about all this. Soon enough my body can't take it anymore and I sink back into unconsciousness.

************

The next time I wake up I feel a soft, but heavy weight on my hand. I try moving again but my body doesn't respond. This is starting to get very frustrating not being able to control my motions. I try to open my eyes but they feel to heavy.

I hear a person enter the room I'm in. I figured out that I am in the hospital due to the doctor who talked to the woman yesterday, at least I think it was yesterday. How long have I been out exactly? That thought makes me tense. What happened to Ryan? How pissed is he? How long have I been gone?

The doctor is shuffling around me and I can tell that he or she is checking my vitals. All of a sudden the weight comes off my hand and I am confused. What was on my hand?

The doctor, who I find out is a woman, starts talking " Sorry to wake you Mrs. Parker, but I just wanted to inform you that Katherine is recovering remarkably well. She should be waking up and responding soon"

"Oh thank God" The woman known as Mrs. Parker says relieved. And with that said, my eyes start to flutter open on their own accord but I instantly clamp them shut due to the bright white hospital room. I hear Mrs.Parker make a noise between a gasp and a sob. I flex my fingers happy to know that they respond on my will. I reopen my eyes but this time the room is much more dim.

"What's going on?" I barely get out and my voice is scratchy due to the lack of hydration. The nurse instantly runs off and comes back with a cup of water that I greedily chug down. I instantly feel much better, if I can even say that after nearly being beaten to death.

Mrs. Parker looks at me with a mix of relief and pity. No, no,no. I don't want pity. Why do they do that? They don't even give you a chance to prove that your fine or strong enough to handle what you went through. "Your in the hospital, sweetheart" she replies softly as if I could break at any moment.

"But how?" I ask still confused on how they found out about me.

"Someone called the police about a disturbance from your household. When the police arrived they heard the loud commotion and they heard you screaming. The raided the house and your father is in jail, and that's how you ended up here. The doctors took X-rays and did tests and they found out you have broken bones that have healed from the age of 8. They said it was possible the abuse has gone on longer." She tells me the answer to my simple question that held so many more.

I look down knowing that they saw my broken arm from when I was 8. Terrible memories start to surface before I shove them out. "What's going to happen now?" I ask quietly afraid to know the answer.

Mrs. Parker looks down at me "I'm Lisa. I was your mother's best friend before the accident. She put you under my custody if anything were to ever happen. When you are healed up and good to go. You will be living with my husband, my children, and I."

I stare at her dumbfounded. I, Katherine Ford, have to go live with a family I know nothing about or ever heard of. So much has happened in such a short time I don't even know what to think.

My father is in jail. I'm in the hospital. I have a new family. What am I supposed to think of all this it's like my life was completely changed by the opening of a new door. Literally.

**Two Weeks Later**

It's been two weeks since I've been released from the hospital. Lisa has agreed to waiting till I was healed before we took a plane to my new home. I have all my belongings packed and they are on the way to the house.

I'm almost completely healed now. I still have traces of a few bruises and of course my burn scars, but those will never go away. Lisa and I have decided that we will be leaving in the morning and boarding our flight across the country. From my home town in Virginia to my new home in California.

Lisa has told me a lot about herself and her life. I figured out that her and her family live in a mansion on the beach side. Her husbands name is John Parker, he seems like a pretty layed back guy. She hasn't mentioned much about her children, I think she is a little reluctant to tell me about them because of the life I lived versus the one they lived, but I let it go. I'll find out tomorrow when I get there.

The next morning I'm up and ready to go. Lisa is a frantic mess, I think she's been away from home to long. That instantly makes a stab of guilt hit me but I push it away, she will be back home in a few hours. That reminds me I should ask her about her children.

On the plane ride I doze off because it is still pretty early for me and the pain medication given to me makes me tired. I'm jolted awake by Lisa telling me its time to go. I collect my bag and head off the plane. Lisa leads us to a limo.

Wait, a limo??

I thought my mom was rich. Get a load of Mr. and Mrs. Parker. Once we are on the way to my new home and i decide it's time to bring up the forbidden topic. " So... you never told me about your children?" I say casually hoping to bring up a conversation.

Lisa noticeably tenses, which causes me to tense up. Maybe it's a sore topic, I know plenty about those. Lisa turns to me with a slight grimace and half smile looking guilty. Which makes me scrunch up my eyebrows in confusion.

What is she not telling me?

Lisa's eyes brighten instantly as the car pulls to a stop "We're here!" she says excited and if I'm not mistaken relieved.

I gently get out of the limo after her and look up at the mansion and freeze. It's beautiful and marvelous, but that isn't the only reason I freeze. There on the steps, is not only John, Lisa's husband, but also her 6 children, who just so happen to be all BOYS.
