Chapter 60

You and I go hard at each other like we're going to war
You and I go rough, we keep throwing things and slamming the door
You and I get so damn dysfunctional, we stopped keeping score
You and I get sick, yeah, I know that we can't do this no more

One More Night by Maroon 5

I hold a framed picture of Adam and John, John is wearing a baseball cap. Dean and Sam examine the picture from over my shoulder. "He took him to a baseball game?" Dean scoffs. "Yeah, when I turned fourteen. Dad was around for a few of my birthdays." Adam says from the door way. I look over and see him leaning against the door frame.

"I look over at Dean and Sam. Dean is glaring daggers at him as Sam is flipping through his father's journal. "September twenty-ninth, two thousand four. One word. 'Minnesota.' " Sam reads.

"He took you to a fucking baseball game?" Dean asks again, but angrier. "Yeah. Why? What'd Dad do with you on your birthday?" Adam asks, like it's not a big deal and all Dean is doing is throwing a toddler like tantrum. He grabs the photo away from Dean.

"Oh..." Dean frowns, all his anger fading out of his body. And sadness taking it's place. Dean frowns and Adam looks away, suddenly realizing what he has said was not good and a touchy subject.

"Adam, you said you called Dad because your mom was missing." I say. "Yeah." Adam says. "How long has she been gone?" I ask. "Three days." He says. "Who was the last person to see her?" Sam asks. "Mr. Abbinanti, our neighbor. He saw her come home Tuesday night, but she never showed up for work on Wednesday." Adam sniffles.

I see another picture, this one of John hugging Kate, I notice that Kate looks a lot like Mary...I look over at Dean and see that he too has noticed the picture. I take his hand in mine and squeeze it, "Did you call the police?" Dean asks, trying his hardest to keep his anger in as he squeezes my hand.

"Mom's supervisor at the hospital did. And then I drove down here as fast as I could." Adam says, taking a pause as he looks down at the ground. "I should have been there." He says sadly.

"What'd the, uh, what'd the cops say?" I ask. "That they, uh, they searched the house. They didn't find anything." Adam says, his eyes tearing up. "She wouldn't leave without telling anybody. It's like she just dropped off the face of the earth, you know?" Adam asks, his voice cracking as he tries to hold in his cries.

"Sam, I am going to take Dean with me to go check out Kate's room. You go talk to the cops and Adam stay here." I say and leave with Dean. We walk into Kate's room and start looking around.

I walk over to the dresser but see nothing as I look behind it, I move it back. My eyes land on more pictures on top of the dresser. One has Kate, John, and a younger version of Adam. Another has Kate and a very small Adam. I turn around and see Dean looking at the photos. "The,. Uh, nightstand was knocked over. Was there anything else?" Dean asks Adam as soon as we walk back over to where Adam is.

"Oh, not really. The sheriff said there's no sign of a break-in." Adam says as we all walk back over to Kate's room and start looking again to see if we missed anything. "What, you think the cops missed something?" He asks. "Maybe. Yeah. They don't have our eyes." Dean says. "You're a mechanic." Adam chuckles.

"Yeah. That's right." Dean says. "Dean, what else can you tell me about Dad?" Adam asks with a bit of hesitation. "You knew him." Dean scoffs. "Not as well as you." Adam says. "Trust me, kid, you don't want to know." Dean snaps.

I notice Sam at the door with a bunch pf papers in his hands. "Adam. Give Dean, Sam, and I a minute." I say as I grab Dean's hand and we follow Sam out into the hall.

"You talk to the cops?" Dean asks. "Yeah. Like Ada said, No leads on his mom." Sam sighs. "Shocker there." I scoff. "But I did find this." Sam says as he goes through the papers that are in his hand till he finds what he was looking for. A copy of the Windom Gazette dated January 9, 1990. The headline is 'Missing Bodies Found.' and the subtitle reads 'Seventeen bodies recovered from abandoned shed.'

"Um...here. In nineteen ninety, there were seventeen grave robberies in Windom." Sam says. "You think that's why Dad came through here?" Dean asks. "I'd say so. Check it out." Sam says as he points at the photo accompanying the article. I take a closer look and see that John is in the background of the photo.

"All right, so he was hunting something. What?" I ask. "No idea. Those were the pages he threw out of the journal. But last month, the corpse snatching started up again. Three bodies from the local cemetery." Sam says. "So whatever he was after, he didn't kill it. It's back." Skye says.

"And, what, it's stepped up it's game to fresh meat? I mean, Kate's missing, and, uh..." Sam reads but takes a small pause as he flips to the next page. This one's a copy of a photo of a man in large black glasses, I read Joe Barton. "So is a local bartender...a guy named Joe Barton." Sam says. As Dean grabs the photo.

We find Adam sitting on Kate's bed. Dean holds up the phot. "Hey, does your mom know Joe Barton?" Dean asks. "Uh, I don't think so. Why?" Adam asks. Dean looks at both Sam and I, then back at Adam. "What is it?" Adam asks. "Watch out." Dean says as he flips up the edge of the comforter and looks under the bed, then gets up.

"Give me a hand with the mattress." Dean says. Sam and I go over and I begin to toss the pillows aside and then with Dean and Sam's help we move the mattress off the bedframe. What we find under the bed is a vent that is large enough to fit someone through. Dean, Sam and I each give each other a look, we each raise our fists and start playing rock, paper, scissors. I pick scissors, Dean and Sam both pick rock. "Damn it." I groan. "I finally beat you." Dean teases and I flip him off.

We take off the vent cover and I go down. I turn on my flashlight and look around the air duct. I come across with red stains along the duct. I notice a T-junction at the end of the duct I am in. "Why didn't I pick Paper." I groan as I crawl into the T-Junction. I see more red stains...blood. I crawl a bit further, to one side is another vent cover, undisturbed. I hold my handgun in my other hand, which I point around the corner before I lean around it. I see a large amount of blood and bits of flesh and bone in duct.
