HERMIONE AND NYX HAD DISCOVERED SOMETHING WONDERFUL. The price they had to pay for it was missing dinner ... Nyx wasn't too pleased about that part, but this extraordinary news made up for it. The girls went up the Gryffindor common room, hoping to run into Ron and Harry who'd likely been there after diner— strangely enough, they weren't.

"Where could they be? Where could they be?" Hermione paced back and forth impatiently.

"Maybe they're looking for us," Nyx shrugged her shoulders and then grinned. "Maybe they decided to go to the library."

Both girls stared at one another for a few moments before they burst out laughing — Harry and Ron, willing to go to the library on their own? Yeah, that was never going to happen. Especially Ron, if it weren't for Hermione he'd avoid that place like the plague.

Nyx and Hermione's head snapped towards the opening portrait hole, and when they saw a glimpse of ginger and black, they sprung into action.

"Ron!" yelled Hermione.

"Harry!" shouted Nyx simultaneously.

Both boys were equally startled — they hardly had time to enter the common room yet (the Fat Lady was staring at them, eyebrows raised).

"What is it?" Ron asked.

The girls seized their arms.

"You've got to come — you've got to come," said Hermione.

"The most amazing thing's happened — please—" continued Nyx.

They started to lead Ron and Harry, dragging them along the corridor.

"What's the matter?" Harry said.

"We'll show you when we get there — oh, come on, quick—"

Harry looked around at Ron; he looked back at Harry, intrigued.

"Okay," said Harry, staring back down the corridor with Nyx, Hermione, and Ron hurrying to keep up.

"Oh don't mind me!" the Fat lady called irritably after them. "Don't apologize for bothering me! I'll just hang here, wide open, until you get back, shall I?"

"Sorry, dear Lady!" Nyx yelled with a smile and a wave to the portrait. "But this is of the utmost importance!"

"Yeah, thanks!" said Ron loudly over his shoulder.

"Just where are we going?" Harry asked, after Hermione and Nyx led them down through six floors, and started down the marble staircase into the entrance hall.

"You'll see, you'll see in a minute!" said Hermione excitedly.

She and Nyx turned left at the bottom of the staircase and hurried toward the door. Harry and Ron followed them down a flight of stone steps, but instead of ending up in a gloomy underground passage like the one that led to Snape's dungeon, they found themselves in a broad stone corridor, brightly lit with torches, and decorated with cheerful paintings that were mainly of food.
