She left me standing in her driveway, making me look like an idiot. I started heading back to my car with my cleats in hand. I threw them in the passenger seat as I headed toward the school.
Natalie and I have been together since sophomore year, she was on the volleyball team, and I remember sitting in the stands watching her play. She came over to me after a game and said, "I won because someone caught my eye."
I asked her out the next day, and we began dating one month later.
We were the talk of the school for the longest time; we still are in some ways. Maybe we are still together because it's what we think is best.
We lost our spark shortly after we started dating; it started feeling like a chore; we had nothing in common, and no matter what we talked about, it seemed like we always had opposite opinions.
Our personalities are entirely different; she never likes to joke around. She was more in it for publicity, always wanting to show PDA and every girl in school that they should be jealous of her.
I wanted a low-key relationship; I would like people to know we were still, but we wouldn't have to shove our tongues down each other's throats in the hallway to prove it.
The thing is, Natalie is the one person who knows everything about me. Even though she is a bitch most of the time, she still listens to me and helps me. Not saying we don't have good moments in our relationship, but most of the time, it's just us arguing. Also, Natalie was the only one who knew when everything went down with my father and me. If I told anyone else, the word would get out, and havoc would let loose.
As the day went on, I kept thinking about how great it would be with my team again.
Once school let out, I stopped at Natalie's locker.
"Hey, I'm headed off to baseball practice. Would you want to go out to eat after I get done?" I said while I kissed her on her cheek.
I slipped my arm around her waist and pulled her close.
Only to have her push me off her.
"Does it look like I have time to sit around and eat carbs? I have to be at peak performance for the first volleyball game in two days which I'm guessing you won't be coming to?" She crossed her arms and looked at me.
"Sweetie, you know I try to come to every game."
I continued, "The team is a huge responsibility for me. I plan on taking us to States this year."
"You never make time for me anymore, and I always try to make time for our relationship while you'd rather be with the boys."
"Nat, I'm sorry. I promise I'll do better, but I know I won't be able to come to your first game. It's the same day as baseball practice." I said as I leaned up against the locker next to hers.
"Well, I'll have to find another guy to come and watch me." Then, with a swift slam of the locker, she left me in disbelief.
I was the only one there when I got to the locker room. Shit, that means the team is already out there.
I hurried up and got changed. Then, I quickly drank a water bottle and grabbed my bag. I've been thirsty a lot lately.
Our sports complex is tiring. They decided to have both the softball and baseball fields near the back of the complex, leaving me having to run the whole length of the complex to make it on time.
I slowed down once I got to the softball field to check out any new players. The first thing I saw was her.
She had her hair up in a messy ponytail and grabbed something from her bag.
