"Alright, get ready to run, ladies." Coach Green screamed.
I just got finished stretching as I turned to Gretchen. She's the only friend I've made so far.
We bonded over the fact that Coach Green needs a man. Gretchen is the 2nd baseman and was good at it, too; she had potential colleges lined up. So we both decided we were going to try college together.
After reading over my experience playing, the coach decided to let me be Caption in hopes that I would finally be able to take South Oak to States.
I assigned the girls to spots they were most familiar with. There were 13 of us....in total. We only had enough for a Varsity team, but I know I can prepare this team for the season.
"Alright, girls, let's start with some long-distance throwing." Coach yells.
I walk over to Maddie and Leah. They were our two pitchers, and I was the team's only catcher.
"Maddie, how fast can you throw?" I asked.
"Um, usually 55 on a good day." She said hesitantly.
"Alright, I plan on getting you up to 60 by the start of the season." I smile at her.
I turn to Leah, "Ok, how about you?"
She looked down at the ground; she was only a sophomore. Nevertheless, I could tell she was nervous about pitching.
"I can pitch close to 50," Leah said quietly.
"Alright, that's perfect!" I'll get you up to 55; you must practice." I said as I gave her a high five.
As the rest of the girls worked on outfield and infield. I took Leah and Maddie to warm-up pitching.
As I learned pitching locations, I saw Ben walking toward the baseball field.
We make eye contact, but he quickly looks away; I wonder what happened.
After practice, Gretchen and I go to the Smoothie Shack.
"Girl, you need to get with him. You've been flirting for two months now." Gretchen said as she inhaled her turkey wrap.
I start to laugh, "You know he has a girlfriend still, and I wouldn't exactly call it flirting."
"If you don't snag him, I will," Gretchen says as she gets up to throw her trash out.
I sigh as I swipe on snap; I see a random text from Kate.
Hey girl, I know it's been a while, but I just wanted to say I missed you. But there is something you should know.
I type back, Yeah, what's up? I miss you so much.
I promised not to say anything but Lilly and Andrew have been seeing each other since you've been gone. She told me last night about it; I'm so sorry b:(
I replied as fast as my fingers could move.
Wait, how long have they been together?
Kate took a couple of seconds to respond.
Since June......
I froze; we were still dating in June. I could feel my heart drop as I slowly stood up.
I couldn't even respond to Kate; I was so confused.
I caught Gretchen talking to a boy our age, I told her I had to go, but I'd call her later.
I slid into my car's driver's seat, and that's when I felt the first tear run down my cheek.
First, he pressured me into giving him my everything, and when I said no, he made me feel awful. Now I find out he and my best friend have been seeing each other since June when we were technically together.
