It's 7:30am on Friday morning and Emily is getting dressed for school. She puts her medium brown hair in a messy bun. She then walks downstairs and eats breakfast with her mom. She finishes, grabs her tote bag and black leather jacket and heads out the door. She walks over to Alison's house and knocks on the door.

Voice: Who is it?

Emily: It's Emily.

Mrs. D. opens up the door.

Mrs. D.: Hi Emily. Umm, Ali will be down in a minute. You can take a seat at the kitchen table.

Mrs. D and Emily walk into the kitchen.

Mrs. D.: How are you this morning?

Emily: I'm okay.

Mrs. D. walks over to the fridge and reaches over top of it for something.

Mrs. D.: Would you like one? (She points at Emily with a banana.)

Emily: Yeah, thanks.

Emily takes the banana out of Mrs. D's hand as Alison walks downstairs.

Alison: Oh, hey Em.

Emily: Hey!

Alison: Mom, have you seen my pink jacket?

Mrs. D.: I think it's in the coat room.

Alison walks to the coat room and finds her jacket. Mrs. D. walks downstairs to say goodbye to the girls.

Mrs. D.: Remember to come straight home, Ali.

Alison walks into the kitchen zippering her jacket. She grabs her bag and walks over to her mother and hugs her

Alison: I will.

Emily: Bye Mrs. D!

Alison and Emily walk out of the door and head to school.

Emily: (She looks at Alison.) Everything okay?

Alison: Yeah. (She looks down at the floor and starts crying softly.)

Emily stops walking and turns to face Alison.

Emily: What happened last night? Did your parents find out about…

Alison: (Crying.) No. My grandmother died yesterday.

Emily: Oh my god. (She hugs Alison.) I'm so sorry Ali.

Alison wipes the tears from her eyes. They continue walking.

Alison: It's okay. But I'm not going to be able to stay.

Emily: What do you mean?

Alison: (She stops at the red light and looks at Emily.) I have to go back to Georgia.

Emily: Are you going back for good?

Alison: No. Just for a week.

Emily: A whole week? What about school?

Alison: I guess I'm gonna have to miss next week.

Emily: Are you sure?

The light turns green and the girls continue walking.

Alison: Yeah. Besides it's only February. I still have time to make up the work i'll miss.

Emily: Well yeah.
