((A/N: Anything "That looks like this" is a memory!))
"I must tell you, (Y/N), I haven't been fully honest with you."
"Tell me the truth," I'm already too anxious, "NOW."
"Although I played ignorance to who lives across from you, I must admit I've already known him. We've grown up together, and fell apart once you and I started dating. You see, all 3 of us were childhood friends."
He has information from back when we were children? And Uta- I was already friends with Uta? That explains how he knew my name from when we first met, but how come they both didn't tell me a single thing? Or at least even tried being my friends again, rather than me waking up to no one waiting for me.
"Then how come.. they told me everyone I knew had died, Adrian? I had no one when I left that hospital alone! And you both knew?!"
"I'm assuming Uta didn't tell you anything, but he didn't have the courage to face you after what he did-"
"Did what?"
"He caused you to lose everything, from your family to your memory. You see.." Adrian pauses, seeing if I wanted to say anything before he continued, "He's always been interested in you since we were young, and he was more than infuriated with me once we told him about us dating. He stopped talking to us suddenly, and didn't interfere for years. A year after we graduated, I saw him leaving a tattoo shop and decided to ask him how he's been all those years. He told me he was finally doing what he always wanted to, making art. He invited me for a ride, to catch up. I suspected nothing, and accepted."
He pauses again, this time letting out a big sigh.
"It was dark out, and our conversation was as normal as normal could be. Then he suddenly asked about you, if we were still dating. I told him I was going to propose to you soon, later that night actually."
Great. Not only did Uta literally rip my insides, he made me miss the one time I actually was going to be proposed to. Because lord knows no one aint going to anytime soon.
"What was odd about it was, his tone or demeanor didn't change. He even congratulated us, looked at me with a slight smile and even dropped me off where you and I were going to meet for dinner. I waved as he sped off, and met you and your family at the front door. After dinner, I offered to drive your parents car home since it was the least I could do. But halfways there.."
I have a horrible feeling about what he's going to say next.
"A car had completely smashed into the one we were in. But you see, I've already been a ghoul for years, and I hardly had a scratch on me. You were the only human survivor."
I stay silent, not sure if I want to know any further gruesome detail. I'm not sure if I feel relieved for knowing what happened, but I suddenly feel the heavy waves of grief. This is the first time I'm actually able to grieve, now that I know.
He continues nonetheless,
"It was Uta, in the other car. Before the paramedics and cops came, I saw Uta look at the scene before him and walk away. I was only able to save you, before the car had.. been engulfed in flames. Looking back, I should've went after him. But I was focused on you, to keep you alive."Silent tears pour, and I feel too shocked to reply still. It feels like there's a knot in my throat, burning as I hold back from screaming. I barely mutter, "Thank you, Adrian. For saving me. But, you should've just let me-"
"I don't want to hear that, (y/n). I don't want to hear nothing of the sort."
"What isn't making sense is that you were sooo in love with me, yet when I woke up you didn't bother to be there!"
"I was in the beginning, I saw you every time I got the chance. Being as strong as a ghoul was worthless at the time, because I couldn't do anything but watch you lay there. I talked to you as much as I could, for you to at least hear me. But one day, I walked in to see Uta standing next to you. I couldn't kill him then and there, would've made too much of a scene and the both of us would be exposed to Investigators. He looked only at you, disgustingly sayi-"
There's a light knock at the door that startles me. Adrain immediately gets silent, and hangs up.
There's another knock, but this time it sounds different than the previous. Hesitant, I slowly open it to see-..Adrain?
"How- what- we were just- how-"
"Can I come in?"
Too confused to fathom him being here, I move aside to let him in.
He looks around, "I should've helped you unpack, my apologies." He begins to unpack my things as I stare dumbfounded.
"What's with the formalities? You sound and seem, different. And how did you get here so fast? We were just-"
"Something told me you weren't going to be in the mood to do anything after that, just wanted to make sure you were feeling well. Oh, and you've never been much of a cleaner so I will grace you with my help on that as well. Have you always had horrible taste in home decor? Hm."
Ah, how can someone sound so heartfelt yet be a jerk in the last 0.2 seconds of a sentence.
He sighs, "I apologize, I have a bad habit of talking too harshly. Bear with me."
Something told me he wasn't going to finish what he said, let alone explain how he got here. I sit against the wall, watching him. The way he talks, and even walks feels somewhat familiar. I look through the phone more, and an hour later he's finished.
"Let me know if you need anymore help, though I personally think this is the best it's ever going to look."
"Youreallymusthavebeenapricksometimes"
His head turns to me suddenly, "Hm?"
"Nothing, thank you for the help. You were right, I don't know when I was going to even try to unpack."
"Anything for you."
I suddenly blush.
He walks out the door but before he's completely out, he turns to me, "May I ask you something? You don't have to respond, even."
"What is it?"
"Will you go out with me again, (y/n)?"
I froze. He was going to propose, and we were together for years. But, I don't remember him at all.
"Give me time to answer, please. I'm not sure."
He gave a slight smile, "Take your time, no need to rush. Let me know when you can. See you soon, (y/n)."
I stand by the door as I see him walk back to his car, and he gives a slight wave. Suddenly, my head throbs painfully as he drives away.
"It was great to see you again, (y/n). "
"Why haven't you come by lately, ____?"
"I can't."
"That's the worst excuse I've ever heard."
"Im quite serious.. Nonetheless I have to go."
"Wait, can you at least tell me the truth? Why-"
"Hey, (y/n)!" He waves his hand slightly as he comes out his car. I turn to my side, only for _____ to be gone.
