Chapter 6 - Lunch Partners
Mr. Mason had reprimanded me for being terminally late to his class. I sunk in my seat in utter guilt slash confusion. Guilty that Mike was not seated beside me and confused because of Edward Cullen's sudden invitation.

It struck me as odd that Cullen would take a sudden interest in me. Maybe my plan worked and I had talked him enough to opening up to me. But that still didn't settle the foreboding feeling I felt in my gut.

Mike gained enthusiasm as the day went on. The rain had more or less taken a break and if the forecast was right then the beach trip would soon be possible. He had also eerily hinted to going to the dance with Jessica and Eric shared with us that Angela had asked him. I was happy for them, and my guilt wore off. I had barely heard Jessica ask me to come with them to Port Angeles for dresses when we entered the cafeteria.

I had constantly peered over to the corner table, hoping the number in people would change. That mystically-and fast as how he always seemed to be-Cullen would be seated between his siblings as in the past few weeks.

"Edward Cullen's staring at you again." Jessica reported, breaking through her talk of corsages. I snapped my head around to see him, seated alone, smiling crookedly in our direction.

"Is he talking about you?" Jessica asked when he beckoned.

"Better go see what he wants." Angela came in our mystified conversation. I nodded and, hesitatingly gravitated between my table and his, wondering whether I should bring my tray.

"What do you want?"

"I thought you would be pleased sitting with me." His tone wasn't that convincing to me. I rose my eyebrow. He took it just as unbelief because he reassured me, "Just for a day. I promise, this might not become a habit. Or it might."

I registered the last words as I sat. Spinning my bottle top between my fingers I wondered, "Those days...before you would talk to me, it was like you wanted to kill me." I forced a chuckle. Cullen stiffened though. I moved to another topic.

"And why were you wearing contacts?"

"Maybe you'll know that later." He muttered.

"What?" He let out a breath and looked up at me from under his lashes. The captivating topaz eyes bore into mine and it was like my brain had been seized.

I don't know what's wrong with it. What's wrong with this alluring male across from me and why he wanted to talk to me.

"Why did you call me over?" My breath overwhelmed my words and it sounded like the wind had been knocked out of me.

"If you're having doubts about driving me to Seattle then..."

"Why would I?" He asked.

"Huh?"

"Why would I?" He reiterated. I stammered over my own tongue. "I...just thought that..."

"You're not imposing, Alyson. I never had doubts." He raised a perfect eyebrow.

"Oh." I lowered my eyes to my Orange juice.

"I told you, Alyson, I can't stay away from you." I looked back up to see him staring at me. "I tried persistently but it was tiring staying away from you. So I gave up."

Those words couldn't-just didn't- go together. Edward Cullen giving up.
