Amoriel got ready. She double-checked her weapons, shoved some ambrosia in her bag, wore a stylish and badass outfit, and was waiting for the other
Leo showed up on the deck, intertwining their hands."Lo siento Amorie," He said softly. "Sé lo emocionado que estabas de volver a la Nueva Roma. Lamento haberte arruinado." (I'm sorry Amorie, I know how excited you were to go back to the New Rome. I'm sorry I ruined it for you.)
"Leo, mi Amore," She told him, looking out at the vast lake. "I'm not mad at you one bit. It was Gaea, not you."
That seemed to lighten his spirits.
Before they left she told him Hazel's story. Hazel was a daughter of Pluto. She'd died in the 1940s and been brought back to life only a few months ago.
Without arguing Leo climbed onto Hazel's magical horse. And Amoriel let out her white feathery wings. They were so big that they dragged behind her as she walked. She turned to the two and smiled. "See you slow pokes at the beach."
And with that, she took off with one flip of her wings. No matter how many times he saw this Leo could never stop being marveled at the sight.
Arion thundered onto the beach, Amoriel was already waiting for them there. He stomped his hooves and whinnied triumphantly, like Coach Hedge yelling a battle cry.
Hazel and Leo dismounted. Arion pawed the sand.
"He needs to eat," Hazel explained. "He likes gold, but—"
"Gold?" Leo asked.
"He'll settle for grass. Go on, Arion. Thanks for the ride. I'll call you."
Just like that, the horse was gone—nothing was left but a steaming trail across the lake.
"Fast horse," Leo said, "and expensive to feed."
"Not really," Hazel said. "Gold is easy for me."
Leo raised his eyebrows. "How is gold easy? Please tell me you're not related to King Midas. I don't like that guy."
"I have to agree with him there," Amoriel said. "I'm gonna kill him and his child of corn next time we see them."
Hazel pursed her lips as if she regretted raising the subject. "Never mind."
Leo knelt and cupped a handful of white sand. "Well...one problem solved, anyway. This is lime."
Hazel frowned. "The whole beach?"
"Yeah. See? The granules are perfectly round. It's not really sand. It's calcium carbonate." Leo pulled a Ziploc bag from his tool belt and dug his hand into the lime.
Suddenly he froze.
"Leo?" Amoriel asked. "You okay?"
He took a shaky breath. Amoriel knelt beside him and helped him fill up the bag.
