COLD MEMORIES

Peter: 16
Edmund: 13

Peter was sat on his throne as he gazed across all the activity going on in the throne room. The fauns and centaur were helping Lucy set up all of the Christmas trees and lights. And Queen Susan was discussing the baking plans for the Christmas parties that were taking place soon.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly. For now at least.

"You know you don't have to sit on that throne ALL the time, right?" Edmund teased as he walked up to Peter.

"I get the best view of the room here. I get to watch the Narnians" Peter replied with a smile.

Before Edmund and peter could properly start a conversation, a few fauns walked up to him.
"We have a few options for a centrepiece at the table. We just need your approval" the faun explained.

"Of course" peter said with a light hearted smile. "Whatever the narnians want as a centrepiece, I'm sure I'll be fine with it"

Peter couldn't have been more wrong.

"As a reminder of how your majesty came to rule, the narnians voted to have a broken piece of Jadis' wand as the centrepiece" the faun explained, rather timidly...as he could sense that the high kings reaction wouldn't be a good one.

As the faun explained, two other walked in carrying the remainders of Jadis' wand in a glass case.

Peter felt anger rise in him whereas Edmund felt like he would faint at any moment.

Peter took a breath and tried to calm himself, as he didn't want to snap at the fauns, who were only trying to please all the other narnians.

" look...I thought it made it clear that that...weapon is to remain in the most guarded vault in the castle. Why in Aslans name would we take it out and display it?" Peter asked, as calmly as possible.

"I'm sorry, your highness. We had a fair voting system. But I'm guessing some of the witch's leftover followers rigged the voting system. We'll take the wand straight back to the vault. Apologies, your majesties" the faun said, his voice trembling slightly.

Edmunds eyes were fixed on the wand as memories came flooding back. The fox. Mr Tumnus. Beruna.

Edmund could feel his heart beating dangerously fast as he felt his breathing become shaky.

Through his panic, he could see that peter was holding back anger. Edmund could always tell when his brother masked emotion. But Edmund wasn't so good at it. He still had an awful paranoia that the narnians hate him for going to the witch in the first place.

He had to get out. He had to get away from the wand. One look at it had sent the youngest king on a spiral of fearful thoughts.

And before he knew it, Edmund had backed away from the entire conversation and ran from the room.

Peter, who was deep in his own concern, hadn't noticed that Edmund had disappeared from the throne room.

"Don't worry. And I think you're right. I think the witch's followers somehow rigged the vote so that the wand would be used as a centrepiece. But why? What will bringing the witch's wand out bring them?" Peter questioned.

"If I had to take a guess...I'd say they're trying to scare you" The faun piped up.

Peter thought for a moment. "Well it hasn't scared me..." he muttered.

Then he suddenly remembered. He might not be afraid, But peter knew how much a mention of the witch scared Edmund.

Peter swerved around to where his brother had been standing, only to see that he wasn't there.

"Oh no" peter muttered.
He turned to the faun, "get the wand back in the vault. Now."
Peter ordered before rushing from the room and up to the room they both shared at Cair.

Peter skidded as he finally reached the room and softly knocked on the door.
"Ed." Peter said.
When there was no response, peter opened the door to find Edmund laying under the covers of the bed, hugging onto one of the silk pillows.

It was then that peter heard faint sobs coming from under the covers.

Peters heart immediately broke when he heard Edmunds sobs. He slowly walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge of it.

"Ed?" Peter questioned, worriedly. He slowly pulled the covers away to reveal a very upset Edmund, tears streaming down his face.

"I'm so sorry, peter. It's all my fault. It would've been easier to kill the witch if I hadn't gone to her and made everything ten times worse" Edmund ranted through sobs.

"No, Edmund...no one blames you..." peter interjected.

"Well they should. I'm the reason Tumnus was hurt and turned to stone...and the fox...and I'm the reason that multiple narnians were killed...just because I wanted to be a king...and now all I am is a king who's a traitor" Edmund said, his voice becoming weak from all the crying.

"Listen to me, Ed" peter said as he pulled Edmund into a sitting position. "You are not a traitor. You had proved yourself to be a great king countless times. I'm so sorry that seeing the wand brought back such awful memories. You should never had gone through that" peter explained.

Edmund suddenly shifted slightly towards his brother, before falling into his arms as the sobbing started again.

Peter pulled Edmund close and held him for what felt like hours. But peter couldn't leave him, not when he was this upset.

Edmund eventually got so tired from crying, that he actually fell asleep in peters arms.

Peter smiled as he gently put Edmund back under the covers.
He stayed with Edmund a little longer, even though Ed was now asleep.

"I'll never leave you, I promise" peter whispered as tears formed in his eyes.
"You're the best king narnia will ever see" peter added to Edmund .

Even though Edmund was asleep and couldn't hear him, Peter still felt like he needed to say that.
