My balls are shriveled. My pants are soaking wet. I wreak of coffee. But none of that matters because I'm standing dumbfounded in front of the girl I never thought I would see again in a million years.
Skye Davis was the one who got away.
The one who took my virginity.
The one who used to be my best friend.
And the one girl who I absolutely, totally and completely hate.
I narrow my eyes at her as she stands there gawking at me. "You owe me new pants." Skye's mouth drops open and she blinks a few times before narrowing her eyes, scowling at me. "It was an accident!"
"Well it wouldn't have happened if you were watching where the hell you were going!""I-" her voice gets cut off by the late bell and I growl, "Great. And now you've made me late. Fucking fantastic. Maybe you should spare someone else and just not fucking be here, hmm?" Before she could muster up a word I walked past her, banging into her shoulder. I could feel her fiery gaze on my back as I walked away but I didn't dare turn around.
Skye.
Fucking Skye.
Why the hell is she here? I shake my head on a small laugh as I make my way into class. "You're late, Mr. Thomas." Mr. Smith scolds me and I turn around to show him my coffee stained clothes, "Yeah. No shit. I was just run down by an idiot in the hall, so..." He looks me up and down before giving me a nod accepting my tardy excuse. "Take a seat."
I sit down, not paying an ounce of attention to the lecture. It's senior year. Do I really need to do this? My mind races with the ghost from my past who's just shown back up in my life. I look down at my soaked jeans and a memory pops into my head.
"Hey! Gimme those back!" Her squeaky whine has me laughing as I hold the gummy bears above my head. "No! You didn't want to be my partner in the races today so I'm not sharing my gummy bears!"
"But you said I could have them, Knight!"
"Yeah. When you promised to be my partner! Instead you partnered with Ian Boulder. And you left me with Maddie Fitzpatrick! Maddie! We came in last place, Skye!"
She lets out a huff, folding her skinny arms over her tiny eight-year-old body. The snack section is empty right now but she still whispers, "I thought that's what you wanted." My eyes went wide and I lowered my hands a bit, "What?"
Skye rolled her eyes, arms still crossed, "The girls were talking and said that you and Maddie liked each other. That you wanted to pair up and I was being a bad friend by not letting you partner with her for the games today. That's why I partnered with Ian instead. 'Cause it's what you wanted." My mouth fell open and I stared at her in disbelief, "What? That's not...what? I don't like Maddie. And I didn't want to be her partner. I wanted to be YOUR partner."
Skye looked up at me through her lashes. I dropped my head down, smiling at the floor and holding the gummy bears in front of me. She smiled, reaching for the bag but when she grabbed them I didn't let go. She tugged harder but I pulled back not letting her take them just yet. "Say you're sorry, Skye. You should have just asked me before switching."
"What?" She blinked a few times, confused.
"Say you're sorry."
"No! I didn't do anything wrong."
"Say you're sorry and I'll give you the bears."
Skye pulled harder on the bag of candy, shaking her head no and I pulled the bag tighter into my grip. Another tug and her grip slipped off the bag. She fell backward into a table of soda, soaking her overalls. I couldn't help but chuckle at her shocked face. "You look like you peed yourself." Skye gasped but I couldn't help but laugh more. She scowled at me before grabbing a cup of soda and throwing it at my pants. My eyes went wide and I looked down at the big wet spot. "Now we're even." She huffed before stomping out of the doors and back to her cabin.
I ended up following her. We stayed up for hours sharing the gummy bears, talking about secrets and promising to be each others partners for everything from that day forward.
The bell rings ending class and the rest of my classes fly by in a blur. It's not until I get to lunch that I'm forced to wake up from my comatose that is Skye-fucking-Davis.
I'm lost, staring at my food when Shane nearly scares the crap outta me. He pats my shoulder as he throws his tray of food down on the lunch table, "Dude, have you seen the new piece of meat yet? She looks delicious." I look over to see him smiling from ear to ear before licking his lips like she is an actual piece of damn meat. Fuck.
"Yup. I saw her."
Niko decides to grace us with his presence at that moment, "Saw who?"
"The new meat we got this year. She's fucking fine, man," Shane supplies.
"Ooh, where she at? Is she in here?" Niko starts scanning the cafeteria while stuffing his sub in his mouth. Shane follows his move, his eyes moving rapidly fast on a hunt to find Skye. I keep my head down the entire time. I already know where she is. I felt her presence the minute she walked in. It takes them way longer to find her than I anticipated, considering she's only sitting a few seats away from us, straight ahead of me by the doors.
"Holy fuck," our friend Reese gapes at her when he see's Shane's smug grin after finding her. He's just gotten to the table but it didn't take him long to realize that everyone was looking around for a hot chick. "Yo, where in the hell did that fine piece come from? I call dibs!"
"No fucking way! I saw her first!" Shane argues with him and I snicker. If only they fucking knew.
I'm waiting for the moment Niko sees her and the second he does I wince at his small gasp, "Holy shit. Is that..." his sentence trails off as he slowly spins to look at me. I sigh, finally lifting my gaze from the table to meet his. "Yup," I nod and watch as his eyes go wide.
"Who is that?" Reese asks at the same time Shane says, "You guys know her?"
Niko lets out a dry laugh, "Yeah. You could say that."
Shane and Reese look between us, waiting for us to elaborate. When we don't Shane finally speaks up, "Are you assholes gunna tell us who the fuck the hot chick is and how you know her because clearly we want to fucking know her too."
Niko laughs again, shaking his head. I turn, scowling at Reese and Shane, "Her names Skye Davis. You'd be wise to stay the fuck away from her. She's a bitch and a liar."
They look at me, wide eyed and curious before turning to look at Niko. He shrugs, laughing again-which is starting to grate on my nerves- before saying, "Otherwise known as the one and only girl Knight has ever been in love with. But he's right, stay away from her."
My head snaps back to him so fast I swear I gave myself whiplash, "Shut the fuck up." Niko smiles his smug ass grin before continuing eating. He's the only one who knows what happened between Skye and I and that's only because he went to camp with us for a few years, if he didn't I would have been happy to keep Skye Davis as a ghost of my past. I look over to Skye's table, watching her as she read's a book with her headphones in her ears, bobbing along to music. The blond girl sitting across from her is chatting away with some skinny dude but my eyes are focused on the girl that haunted my dreams once upon a time.
I guess I've been staring too long because Skye sits up like a rod has just been stuck up her spine, and she starts scanning around the cafeteria, looking for the person who's been watching her. When her eyes land on mine, I narrow mine. She rolls her eyes before turning back to her book. I grin, "Actually," the guys stop their side conversation to look at me, "we're not going to stay away from her. Get ready boys, this is going to be fun."
