As we walk out the motel door, I make sure that I have my phone and charger in my little backpack. Once I see that it's there, I walk out to the car and hop into the drivers seat.
"Another long day ahead. You got everything?" I ask, putting the car in gear.
"Yep," he says. We fall into an awkward silence for about 20 minutes. He is the first to break it.
"So we've never really discussed our relationship..." he says, turning to look at me. Oh no.
"What relationship Andy? We've been friends since diapers," I say, passing a semi.
"You know... our friendship. We never discussed what it is. Like is it just froends or will we be more someday maybe?"
Wait am I hearing correctly? Did he seriously just ask me that?
"I don't know. Possibly? I guess it just depends on things," I say, looking over at him. He is sitting criss-cross on the seat with his back against the door. His hair flops just over his eyes, the perfect messiness.
"What kind of things?"
"Well, we'd run the risk of fuining our friendship."
"True, I suppose."
"It'd also be hard, since I'd be going to a school across the country."
"That's also true. But there's always video chat and texting and phome calls," he says. Is that hope I hear in his voice?
"Andy, what are you insinuating here?" He stays quiet for a while, not a word comesnoht of either of our mouths. I'm waiting for a response, he's gathering courage to give me one.
"Listen, I'm not about to get all mushy here, but I know that you like me. Kay, it's kind of obvious," he says, when I look over at him, surprised, "you're cheeks turn fire-engine red when I compliment you, and you twittle your thumbs whenever I'm around. I know that's one of your nervous habits. But it's okay, one because it's adorable, and two because ilikeyoutoo."
Wait what did he say? "What was that last part?"
"Ilikeyoutoo."
"What?"
"I like you too! There I said it." He flushes a deep crimson color, and my heart melts. This is too adorable.
The only problem:
I'm about to leave for a month, come back, and leave again, to go across the country.
