𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐈𝐍𝐆:
DANE DEHAAN as NICHOLAS JAMES☂️
Katherine was fine.
As she, an adult, snuck out of the house at one in the morning to go meet Nicky, she was fine. As her locket bumped tauntingly against her chest with every step she was fine.
The streets were quiet as she made her way to Nicky's house, her coat wrapped tightly around herself to block out the chilly wind of November. One light in his home was on, the living room, and she knew that meant come in.
His house was warm and her heart thumped in her chest nervously, "Nicky?"
Katherine wasn't stupid. She absolutely wasn't stupid.
His head popped around the doorway of the kitchen, eyes bloodshot, a spoon lodged in his mouth with a jar of peanut butter in one and a blunt in the other.
"Hey there, Katherine." He gave her a smile and motioned for her to come closer. He handed her the blunt before turning back around to dig in his refrigerator.
But as Katherine took a large inhale, she felt stupid.
"Long time no see! I was wondering when you'd visit again." He chuckled, his head buried in the freezer on top of his refrigerator, the rustling sounds of bags nearly drowning out his voice.
"I've been busy," she exhaled the smoke. "You didn't call." Katherine said quietly, watching Nicky closely as he slowly pulled away with a small container of ice cream.
"Sorry about that, I guess I got busy too. My sisters been bugging me about going back home to visit," he rolled his eyes. "She never fucking leaves me alone."
Katherine nodded in understanding, but she didn't... not really. No matter what happened she still yearned to see her siblings.
Nicky motioned her to follow with his head, his arms full of food as he stumbled into the living room and collapsed on the sofa. Katherine took another deep inhale before handing it back to Nicky.
She could feel her eyes starting to close as the drugs began to hit and laid back against the sofa beside him. The television was on playing something Katherine had never seen but Nicky seemed to be engrossed in it. Katherine's hand wandered up to touch her locket gently to make sure it was still there, before dropping back into her lap.
"Hey what's in that thing anyways?" Nicky's curious voice pulled Katherine out of her daze.
It took her a moment to register and another to pull it off her neck. "Coke." She said blankly, undoing the top and showing Nicky the small silver spoon and the white powder beneath.
He seemed amazed. "Wow, I've never done cocaine before." Katherine found that hard to believe, Nicky probably did more drugs in one week than Klaus did in a year.
She wordlessly scooped some of the powder onto the spoon and held it up to Nicky's nose. He sniffed gently before recoiling, "Jesus Christ," he muttered, rubbing his nose violently.
Katherine giggled a little as she did the same. All thoughts of her siblings, all of her worries, the reality of her situation all drifted away. It was peaceful, she wondered why she hadn't turned to drugs sooner.
Wait, that's not right. Her eyebrows furrowed as she shook her head.
But it was great not having to face her problems. She would have peace for a few hours and had good company in Nicky. Nicky who had no idea of the things she'd done, the things she'd been through, who she was before everything, who her family was.
Nicky who was blissfully unaware of who he spent his Friday and Saturday nights with and Nicky who asked no questions.
It was amazing.
No, this is wrong.
Katherine's head lolled around her shoulders as she watched the cartoon with growing interest. "What is this?" She asked, pointing towards the television.
Nicky tilted his head to look at her, eyebrows furrowed as he shoved a spoonful of ice cream topped with peanut butter into his mouth. "It's off, Katherine." He let out a laugh muffled by his food.
She turned back to look at the black television screen. Katherine giggled and shook her head, sighing in relief as she got comfortable. God was it nice hanging out with Nicky, he didn't judge her for anything like she knew Allison or Klaus or Ben would.
Katherine had met Nicky a month ago at a liquor store where she was buying vodka in bulk. He seemed to like the fact that she drank more than the typical martinis and she found that he was actually a very nice, partially sober, person.
And here she was, getting high like she usually did on the weekend in the his judgement free house that was always stocked with food.
"Bathroom?" Katherine asked Nicky. He looked up from his ice cream slowly and nodded. "You know where it is?"
She gave him a thumbs up before stumbling down the hallway into his bathroom. His bathroom was lined with faded wallpaper and freezing cold wooden floors.
Katherine stood at the equally cold porcelain sink and looked at her reflection. Her blonde hair was neatly pulled back into a bun, blue eyes that she had tweaked to match Nicky's surrounded by red.
She looked down at her locket before opening it back up again. I'm fine. She pulled the spoon out and eyed the small mound of powder. There's nothing wrong with this. Katherine held it up to her nose and sniffed. It's taking your problems away.
Katherine was fine.
