Chapter 15
Maekaylas POV -
I amble slowly back to the barn, not helping but noticing that with every step Matt’s shoulder brushes against mine. It strange actually. We are almost the same height and taller than nearly everyone else at the barn. But he’s a bit taller, so he holds the record. Yes… We tested.
Once we reach the barn, Matt explains that he has jobs to do and leaves me standing alone in the walkway wondering what to say to “Amethyst”. I had been really rude to her. But then again Matt seemed to take a lot of interest so maybe it’s for the best. No. I decide. No it’s not.
I walk into the stall and lean up against the doorway and find Amethyst hard at work brushing the saddle and sweat marks from Acorns little body.
“Lesson went well didn’t it bud,” she says. It takes me a while to realise that she was talking to the horse.
“Yeah I know! You have springs for legs! Who would have guessed huh? Quite the jumper you are.” She smiles and he nickers in response.
I clear my throat, startling Amethyst and causing her to jump around in surprise. She glares at me. Not in a rude way. More of a questioning glare, as if wondering what I could possibly want.
“I’m sorry,” I said sincerely, “We got off on the wrong foot. I didn’t exactly mean to be rude… I just..” I stuttered.
“You just having a bad day?” Amethyst asks, finishing my sentence for me. That wasn’t exactly what I was going to say. But I went along with it anything because it was certainly much better “I don’t like you very much because I’m jealous that Matt does.” I wipe the thought from my mind.
“Yeah, I suppose so.” I shrug.
“That’s ok.” She respond, flashing me a smile. I have to admit Matt was right. She was quite pretty. I looked down once again at her clothes that had somehow still managed to remain clean. A pang of jealousy hit me again. My parents never bought me clothes like that. I was about to mention the fact but I caught myself before I said anything that I don’t really mean and push all thoughts of it aside.
“So, can we try this again?”
“Try what?”
I stretch out my hand in response, offer her my best smile and say, “Nice to meet you, I’m Maekayla.” She laughs and accepts my hand, shaking it lightly.
“Amethyst.”
“Have you had any riding experience?” I ask, trying to jolt her into a story to avoid the awkward silence that was settling.
“Well yeah. Some… I… I just to ride…” she stuttered finally as if trying to find what to say. What was she hiding? “What about you? How long have you been riding? Do you like, have a horse or?” She continued covering from her stuttering before.
“Woah! One question at a time!” I laughed.
“Sorry! I just get a bit carried away sometimes!” She apologised.
“No! No! Don’t worry about it! I do the same,” I admitted without even thinking. So we did have something in common? “I’ve been riding since I was around 5 I guess. Not properly but I had lessons like once a week. And then when I got older I started helping more at the barn and yeah, just sort of carried on from there. Then we moved and I had a break from riding for a bit, but I’m back into again now.” I explained trying to answer all of her questions.
“And you don’t have your own horse?” She questioned staring at me with her mouth agape in surprise.
“No. I’ve never owned actually. But I lease Artemis,” I said, turning to point at the stunning, paint Clydie X in a stall across the aisle. “So I guess she’s sort of mine.”
“Awesome! She’s stunning!” Amethyst said as she left Acorn’s stall and wandered over to Artemis’s.
“Hey girl,” she cooed, reaching up a small, tanned hand to stroke her massive head. Artemis nickered in response and stuck her head out further, obviously enjoying the special treatment. A shrill neigh sounded from the other side of the aisle and we turned to find Acorn trying to unbolt his door and reach back out to us as if saying Hey! Guys what about me!
Simultaneously we both looked at each other, both with the same expression on our faces. Then cracked up laughing.
Suddenly I stopped, realising that this girl was the one that was succeeding in snatching Matt from my grasps. Call me jealous but… I mean seriously.
We stand like this awkwardly for a second before I say, “Would you like to go on a trail ride?” I ask as sincerely as possible. It feels like glue in my mouth but I say it anyway. It’s not that I don’t want to go on a trail ride with this new girl that I barely know but everyone already seems to love. It’s just. I don’t know. It seems like the nicest thing to do. And Artemis and I need a good hack anyway. Plus who knows. Maybe she’s actually really nice and friend worthy. So far she’s showing potential? And if not? Watching her ride and picking on her faults could be fun.
“What, like now?” She asks confused.
“Yeah! Obviously!”
“Are we allowed?”
“Yeah of course we are!”
“Umm… Ok? Sure. I’ll just text my mum and tell her to pick me up a bit later.”
“Ok I’ll go tack up Artemis. Meet me outside the barn in about 15 minutes?”
And I’m gone before I hear the answer.Hey guys!!
