"Whenever someone comes after you, just remember, SOS," Samantha grabs Shane's phone, puts herself under an emergency contact, which she always does before school.

"Sammy, I know," he leans over to look at the girl on his phone. "You act like my mother."

"Nah, I'm a better mother than her. At least I care to listen to my kid."

"Okay," Gill drags out the word, plucking the phone from her girlfriend's fingers. "You are too far into that roll, Babe. But," Gill tosses the phone back to her best friend. "She's right; we're the SOS."

Shane watched as Gill walked behind Samantha and sat down, pulling the girl into herself. They were a cute couple, and Shane was envious. He's only dated once, and it was a female in middle school. Jason didn't count. They weren't even together just got majorly flirtatious.

"Right, I know."

"Mystery man won't be there all the time."

Shane's mind when back to the new student. It's been a week since their first encounter with each other, now Shane knows all their classes together. 1st hour, which they had math together, 4th hour, is World History, 5th hour is ELA 12, 7th hour is PE, and Shane would notice they both often used their free hour together. Shane would sit in the staircase and do homework so he won't have to at home; mystery man uses that staircase to go to his mystery spot.

"Hello, earth to dweeb," Ein stands over Shane, Gill, and Samantha move to his side.

"Go away, Ein," Gill threatens. She feels no fear for this man because she knows she can put up a good fight. Her girlfriend and her best friend are the people she's worried most about at this moment. She knows Ein wouldn't ever hit a girl, but she would strick him if needed. She doesn't ever want the day to come when she's at Shane's side when they attack because that would mean they are not scared of her anymore.

Everyone knows Gills strength; it's hard not to when she gets into fights with people who bully Samantha or Shane in front of her. Also, the fact rumors spread fast in that school, like her little bar brawl. Being in a female body and fighting like only men do in that neighborhood is frightening to most of their age. Most think, "what the hell did she go through" when she fights. She moves like a boxer because her trainer was a boxer.

When Ein stays in place, Gill stands, pulling at her leather jacket, beginning to take it off. Samantha protests against the threat, pulling on Gill's wrist.

"Leave," the venom in Gills voice and eyes was enough for Ein to glare but back up.

This time, instead of allowing Gill to act alone, Shane stands as well, glaring at the stronger and older male in front of him. Samantha stands quickly after. He grabs Samanthas hand, creating a chain reaction in which Samantha holds her girlfriend's hand.

Ein moves his glare over to Shane, and Shane wants to shutter away, crawl into a safety ball, but he forces himself to mock the act. Jason watches the endeavor, then walks forward and stands at Eins side; there was a small sense of hope in Shane that the person Jason stood by was not the teenager on steroids.

"What crawled up your ass and died this time?" Gill shot at them.

"A few Emo fags did," Ein spat in the direction of the trio.

"This Emo fags foot is about to be up your ass," Gill steps forward, fist clenched, teeth grinding.

Shane believes that if this were an animation, smoke would be blowing out of Gill's ears. Gill feels like her heads about to explode, much like Shane imagined that happening.

Luckily, as Samantha pulls Gill away from her charging position, another character steps in. The mystery student is in front of them, staring down Ein and Jason. The mystery student doesn't say anything; he stands straight with his shoulders back, in a way that would intimidate anyone.

Shane also notes the outfit the mystery man is wearing. Black Skinnies, ripped at the knees, a red belt, red and black Jordans, a casual black tee, and a red and black flannel he just ripped off and threw to the blonde beside him. Shane wanted to whistle, so he did, in his head.

It's now confirmed; the mystery man is also emo.

"Can I help you?" Ein steps forward.

There's a beat of silence until the mystery man shrugs his shoulders casually. Ein smirks, rolling his eyes.

"Are you the guy everyone's calling Ein 2.0? For real? Another damn emo that knows how to put up a good fight?" Jason grabs Eins shoulder, abruptly stopping him from taking another step. "What, this mute can't be that bad."

"Leave," the single word that stopped everyone.

In the whole week of the new student being there, that was his first spoken word. He had a dark rich voice, groggy and his volume low. Shane found himself falling for the sound, wishing for him to speak out again.

"So you want to speak up now, huh? Guess you aren't a mute," the wicked smile that played upon Eins face is one Shane saw many times before; it's always the one before the first punch. "Why should I leave when this didn't even involve you?" Eins voice now dark, and anger takes over.

The new student didn't say anything, just popped his knuckles and put his fist up to his face, stretching out his neck. That was a challenging pose to Ein, so Ein took the invitation and took the first throw.

He landed the first hit, then a second, and a third. Gill moved the trio over as the new student allowed Ein to move their position backward. Ein landed the fourth hit, then Shane watched as the blond who always hangs out with the new student yells out.

"NOW."

The new student doesn't hesitate to start fighting back. A few simple jabs and a strong kick to the jock's side forces Ein is on the floor. While the teen is trying to stand, the blond associated with the mystery man is at his side, grabbing his shoulder.

He could've sworn he heard the blond say, "we can't afford another hospital bill," which spikes the emos interest. Shane Ignores the previous comment; his mind fixes back onto the mystery man now leaving.

He pulls away from his best friend's grip and starts after the two ascending the stairs. He shouts for the mystery man to wait, but he doesn't, so Shane pushed himself to try harder and ran to be ahead of them both.

"Please, stop ignoring me," the 17-year-old puts his hands up in a halting motion. The blond gives a small, compassionate smile, while the mystery man raises a pierced eyebrow.

"No one helps, so why do you?"

A staring contest breaks out, and Shane fears everyone can hear the thumping of his heart. But the mystery student breaks the silence with a shake of his head and a hum.

"Okay, can I at least have your name?"

Another pause, but this time the blond hit the mystery student's shoulder, nudging him forwards.

Shane watches as the mystery man glared, but upon looking at Shane, the gaze softened. It takes a good minute before the mystery student stops thinking and finally speaks.

"Zane."
