"Hey, what's your name?" A nicely tanned taller man sits next to a short and anxious Shane. "Mines Jason."
"Shane."
"Well, nice to meet you Shane. I just wanted to say I like your style, and also to welcome you to Rale High. I'm a sophomore, so we might not be seeing each other much, but if you ever need anything feel free to find me."
Shane took this act of kindness light heartedly, he didn't believe anyone's kindness but Gill and Samanthas when they would talk.
"Noted, thanks Jason."
Jason smiles at Shane, then stood again. As he walked away he places a hand on Shane's shoulder and dragged it along to his other, giving Shane shivers.
When Shane looked at Jason again, Jason wasn't looking back, and talking to another student. Shane sighs internally, thankful that in his head it was just a thing that guys do and not flirtatious.
He lets his mind drift to something else, anything else, and it works, it worked so well he forgot about the man until it was the schools first football game of the year, and they were at an assembly to promote the team. He saw Jason, he didn't care about who was which position, he hated football, but it was the eyes that caught his again that made him care. He went back to that act of kindness, and watching how into the moment Jason was made Shane want to laugh at the man. He figured instead of making things weird he just looked back down at his phone with his best friend Gill, and her friend Sammy.
He felt eyes on him the whole time, making his anxiety grow, making him go deeper into his shell, and after getting more than annoyed by the feeling of stares on him he looks up. He hates people staring at him, but only gives certain people the pass of staring at him. The guy Jason, who has been staring at a guy for more than the "straight guy" time limit, did not have that staring pass. So Shane glares, but Jason keeps his small smile, then moves his gaze elsewhere.
Shane was thankful to say the least, and disregarded the situation.
Another month went on without Shane seeing the sophomore, and he was focusing on other things, like the work he's allowed to pile up because of stress and his depression. Shane knows what is needed to be done, and what he can stop to get caught up, he's told all the time, but his depression won't allow it. He needs to have time with his music and his art, and when he is forcing all his attention into school work he feels like relapsing. So, music and art it is.
He managed to pass freshman year, and he's lucky he went onto the next grade unlike his old acquaintance Jason.
When Shane sees Jason in his home room he's shocked, but when Jason sees Shane he smiles and beckons Shane over. Shane looks around trying to find anyone else he could possible know, or see if Jason was waving to anyone else, but he was the chosen one. He hesitantly walked over and sat in the empty chair next to Jason.
"Lovely seeing you here, glad you made it."
"Why are you here?"
"Held back, but that's alright."
Shane nods, avoiding looking at the guy next to him. Shane did not what to be there, he'd rather be anywhere else, because he was uncomfortable.
"How did freshman year treat you?"
"I'm surprised I moved on a grade..." he talks in a hushed voice. "Why are you still here? You don't seem like one to be held back."
"Stuff interferes with school, that's all. But, Im glad to be seeing you again."
"Me?"
"Yup, I like how you still have the same attitude and style as when you got here."
Shane just looked down then nodded up at him, and looked down again.
"I feel now that you've gotten used to high school it'll run smoother than before. It's easy to catch on."
"If it was you wouldn't be here right now," Shane replied, again in a hushed voice.
"Family stuff got in the way, I was having a hard time with that, not school... I do swear it's easier this year thought."
"I doubt it..."
"Don't always be a Debbie Downer, look on the bright side, only 2 more years after this."
Shane wasn't looking forward to that either, but at least he could move out and be free to be himself openly in his own house. Shane just stared down at his hands, not knowing how to respond to the guy next to him without sounding like a "Debbie-Downer".
"Hey, I swear it won't be that bad. If school don't work out, well at least you have a support system."
Shane looked over and nodded at the guy-Jason.
"I feel this year will be looking up, so if you ever need anything come to me, I'll be here."
"Yeah, thank you."
Jason smiled and decided to look away from the anxious boy next to him, giving him some space and went to his phone for entertainment instead. But, he did allow himself to look at the boy now and again, and saw the boy drawing, quite decently actually. He'd wanted to observe more, but he knew Shane had been more than intimidated by Jason, and Jason wanted to respect him.
After all, Jason wanted the boy next to him to be more comfortable with Jason. Jason wanted to befriend Shane, because Shane was different than everyone. Shane didn't care about the way he dressed or acted, which was different than everyone else in the high school. Everyone had to be like everyone else, if you weren't you were an outcast. But, the "outcast" were actually decent people who were just being themselves, and Jason admired them.
Jason wanted to be like them, wanted to be true to himself. But, instead his father and mother kept him from doing just that. They wanted him to be perfect in the un-godly horrible neighborhood he grew up in. He just couldn't ever meet their expectations.
