We ran outside the building, being as silent as possible. Daryl grabbed a lighter and a piece of paper, throwing it towards the large walker herd that we came across.
We sprinted into a tall building, finding the dead crawling in sleeping bags. Daryl and I went and stabbed them, killing them once more.
"Some days, I don't know what the hell to think." Daryl sighed as we watched walkers claw inside of a tent. We continued, cautiously moving between a locked door. I squeezed through, grabbing our weapons as I watched Daryl's large form do the same with a soft chuckle.
"Good thing we skipped breakfast."
"Ain't that right." I giggled.
We continued, finding a large room to get a good look through. It was an office of sorts. I walked towards a window, looking at the destruction that lay before me.
"How did we get here?" I asked with furrowed brows. Daryl hummed at me.
"Just did." He replied softly.
"Is this really what it's come to? All this... destruction. All this pain. There has to be something more. I mean... this can't be it." I said with a shaky breath.
"Hey. This isn't it. It isn't." Daryl said, placing his hands on my shoulders to steady me. He moved his head to catch my eye as I sighed.
"We can start over. Everything we've done. It doesn't have to be this way."
"But what if it is? I mean... Connor... he doesn't deserve to have a mother who is a murderer. A father who is a piece of shit. No one deserves this."
"You're not a murderer. You did what you had to do." He told me firmly.
"You haven't asked what happened after the prison fell. What I had to do." I said softly. He shrugged his shoulders and grunted.
"You survived. You did what you had to. No shame in that."
"It feels worse than that."
Daryl leaned forward towards the window, trying to get a closer look at something.
"You see something?" I asked.
"I don't know. Hand me that rifle." I did as he said, watching him scope out.
"Right there." Daryl pointed. I looked through the scope with him, finding a van with two white crosses on the back.
"It's been there a while." I commented.
"Definitely one of them."
"It's definitely some kind of lead," Daryl said optimistically.
"We should fill up," I said, getting everything ready.
"Alright." I grabbed the water canisters and filled them up with water. I took a sip of the water, wetting my dry and cracked lips.
"What?" A chuckled.
