The reflection lies.
It does not show her what it truly sees
Instead the glass reflects the hatred society projects
Creating flaws in her mind
Imperfections in her eyes
That are not really there. The reflection is manipulative.
When she looks into the glass for validation
She is plunged deep into the pool of her mind
Where the only response are empty words
Scrawled over her
Magnifying the misconceptions. The reflection is deceptive.
Looking in, hopeful and happy
A different face glares out
A face framed and fake
Overwhelmed and insecure over blemishes
That do not exist. The reflection is pressurising.
Pushes her towards the makeup brush
Pulls her away from herself
Sucks her stomach in
Sticks her into the mould
Because 'good girls' do what they're told. The reflection is restrictive.
It shines a harsh white light over her, unwavering and false
Highlighting every insecurity
Putting each anxiety in a threatening dark bold
Drains the colour from her face, until she's cold and frozen
Like a pretty Barbie doll. The reflection lies.
It does not show her who she truly is
Instead the glass reflects the impossible standards society projects
Creating flaws in her mind
Imperfections only in her eyes
That were never ever there.
If only she could see the truth.LD x ~ 14/7/20
