Twins, Kristina and Nathan are raised by their father, Saracen Rue and his good friend Skulduggery Pleasant. They don't know who their mother is, as Saracen refused to tell them. Will they find their true mother? What will happen if they do? Do they really want to know? No parent would abandon their children like that, do they really want to meet the person who abandoned them as soon as they were born?

Without understanding why, Valkyrie and the three remaining Dead Men find themselves trapped in an old, abandoned mansion, forced to play the Midnight Game. Three hours and thirty three minutes at first seems trivial - but it soon becomes clear that these will be the slowest hours any of them have ever experienced. Valkyrie and the others must weigh survival against sanity if they want to win the game. The prize for winning: Life. The penalty for losing: Most likely death.
