“So, I would still like to be your friend.” Suzie uncrossed her arms for a second but quickly re-crossed them. She looked like she was about to say something else but she quickly shut the door without saying anything.
Suzie quickly got a glimpse of herself in the mirror and went to the kitchen. She instantly grabbed a bowl from Crystal’s cupboard and poured herself three times more than the serving size. She smiled when she tasted her cheerios but instantly decided to add banana to the mixture. She smiled when her stomach gurgled from happiness. She agreed that she wouldn’t starve herself again because of a boy. The only reason she decided to was because Nino was known to only like skinny girls. This was Nino’s first break up with a girl and Suzie thought it was because of her weight. Through some reassuring encouragement, Crystal finally got sick of her and took a shower to steam off of her troubles.
“You’re eating.” Crystal smiled and tightened the towel around her body. “Can you get me a bowl of that while I get changed?” Suzie barely nodded yes because Crystal interrupted. “And even though it’s better to eat, that much isn’t healthy for you.”
Suzie quickly rolled her eyes and took the spoon out of her mouth. “Yes, mom.” She giggled as some milk dribbled down her chin and fell on the floor. Crystal rolled her eyes and got changed faster than Suzie knew possible.
"So, who was at the door?”
“Undesirable number two.”
“What’d he want?”
“He still wants to remain friends.”
“That’s impossible without getting a little edgy. What’d you say?”
“I didn’t. I just shut the door.”
“Wise.” Crystal spooned some cheerios and winced when she felt the slime of the banana fill her mouth. “I think I want to remain friends with Lenny.”
“As of now, that’s not up to you.” Suzie tried to act cool about the subject and shrug her shoulders, but she felt bad that she even brought it up. “I mean, maybe someone could get Geonnie to forgive him. Then he’ll be your friend.”
“Who? Joy is in cyber school, Kriey doesn’t want to get involved, Faith doesn’t like her, John hates her, and I haven’t been talking to Avril to ask her.”
“So that leaves me and Miranda,” Suzie announced.
“Not you. You’d probably forget about us if you became her friend.” Crystal purposely raised her eyebrows to make Suzie feel bad. When she did, Crystal smirked and finished the rest of her cereal in silence. “That leaves Miranda, but I can’t ask her. Ever since she started dating Gregg, we haven’t really talked.”
“Why?”
“Gregg and I were close. I don’t need to ruin his relationship like I did with Lenny.” Suzie thought for a moment and let Crystal eagerly wash her dishes for her.
“You like him, don’t you?” Crystal didn’t say anything, which made Suzie pressure her even more. “You just confirmed my suspicions.”
“I don’t like Gregg like that. He’s just my… brother, I guess. You could also say he was like my father.”
“Brother zoning,” Suzie whispered under her breath. Crystal gave her a look but left it alone since she wasn’t supposed to hear it. “Well, if Lenny doesn’t work out for you and Miranda doesn’t work out for him, I hope you guys get together.”
Crystal turned around but Suzie already left out the door. Crystal stood at the counter for a while and realized that she had to go to school today. She couldn’t fool her mom anymore because it’s been nearly a week since they started faking. Suzie finally agreed to go but only if Crystal would.
