Author's Note: This is the second book to the series. The first is titled 'BFFs'.
Crystal rummaged through her belongings again until she realized that her paper wasn’t in sight. She grunted and slammed her locker shut. She quickly looked around before deciding to call her friend, Joy. The phone rang and rang until Crystal hung up because she knew Joy wasn’t going to answer.
She was already late for debate team but it was going to be even worse since Crystal didn’t have her paper turned in. Of course, it was a club and they weren’t required to do any homework but if you were serious about it, you would do it.
Crystal quickly knocked on the door and let herself in. She calmed herself down when she saw the dimmed lights and walked over to sit in an empty chair. She breathed in once more and looked around.
She quickly made sure she was in the right room and then she looked at the time on her phone. She sighed and realized that there was someone in the front of the classroom. She managed to get up and sit next to him.
“Where is everyone?”
“Most of them are either on prom committee or they’re trying to get elected prom queen and king.” Jeremy turned towards Crystal and smiled. “I’m surprised you aren’t going for queen.”
Crystal instantly laughed and punched him in the arm. He looked confused but Crystal just thought it was because he was a really good actor.“I’m not even in twelfth grade yet!” she laughed harder but Jeremy just nervously laughed. “We’re in the same grade.” She rolled her eyes and sighed. “How can we do debate practice if nobody’s here?”
“You can take off.”
Crystal did her best McKayla Maroney face and went to walk away. She was out the door when Jeremy called out to her again.
“Hey, Crystal!” he jogged up to meet her and they walked silently for a little bit. “Maybe you should come over my house for a bit.” Crystal tensed. “For debate practice.” Crystal stopped being tense but still wouldn’t close to him. “And only as friends.”
He smiled and waved as he ran backwards. Eventually, he was out of sight and Crystal finally began to breathe. She hated encounters with him. He always flirted with her and Crystal was afraid that she might flirt with him back.
It wouldn’t be that bad but he was Leah’s boyfriend. Although, Leah isn’t Crystal’s friend anymore, she wouldn’t do that to anyone. Even if her ex-best friend showed her true colors at one of her parties and humiliated her.
Crystal didn’t care though. When she rushed out the school’s doors and into her car, she headed towards the coffee shop.
***It seemed like Joy was the only person who arrived out of the clan. When Crystal arrived, Joy was excited that someone was there. She waved her hand and her best friend came over quickly.
“Where are Miranda and Suzie?” she asked.
“I have no idea.” Joy gave Crystal her cup and she sipped. “Why are you out of debate so early?”
“Nobody showed up.” She sipped her cup but when it was too hot, she set it down and explained everything to Joy. “I would’ve said something back but it was hard to without sounding flirty.”
“Yeah, desperate isn’t good on anyone,” Joy joked. Crystal smiled and hit her on the shoulder. “But seriously, you should totally flirt back. It’s obvious he likes you.”
